The hottest band in the domestic metalcore scene is Graupel—pronounced “Grau-pel.” Though young, their technique and the meticulously crafted quality of their songwriting are undeniable.

You could say they encapsulate everything that makes metalcore compelling: deft shifts between speed and heaviness, scream vocals that lay emotions bare, and a fusion of loud, crushing sound with catchy melodies.

Also noteworthy is their complex yet fluid chord work, influenced by post-black metal.

Think Ever AfterAION

AION, often mentioned alongside “X in the East, AION in the West,” unfortunately ceased activities in 2017.

With a visual-kei look but a purely heavy metal sound, they had a distinctive and unusual contrast for their time.

Vocalist NOV’s distorted voice is extremely aggressive.

Currently, vocals are handled by Fuki, who is also active as a solo artist under the name Fuki.

Their hallmark is symphonic songs featuring soaring vocals and extensive use of keyboards, giving a radiant impression reminiscent of Scandinavian melodic metal.

The melancholic sound suits the vocals well.

Arise in Stability is unquestionably one of the bands that played a major role in establishing technical metal in Japan.

Showcasing the members’ extraordinary chops to the fullest, their songs unfold in a succession of wildly intricate passages that also incorporate elements of progressive metal and chaotic hardcore.

In 2020, they released their second album, “Sairei,” their first since 2011, making them one of the indispensable bands when discussing modern Japanese metal.

A three-piece progressive thrash metal band featuring Kou Morota, a bassist with a genius-level talent.

Despite being a trio, their sound is crushingly heavy, and their intricate, enigmatic performances and avant-garde music have continued to be loved by fans across generations.

After a long hiatus, they restarted in 2014 with Takatoshi Furuhira from CASBAH joining on bass.

This is a symphonic metal project fronted by AKANE LIV, a former Takarazuka Revue otokoyaku (male-role) performer who is now active mainly in musicals.

Her expansive vocal range—said to span four octaves—and the clear, soaring vocals honed in the troupe are truly breathtaking.
