Japanese metal bands: From mainstream to unique, popular bands in Japan’s metal scene (41–50)
Asian ChaosGYZE

A Japanese melodic death metal band based in Sapporo, Hokkaido, centered on the Shinomoto brothers: Ryoji on vocals and guitar and Shuji on drums.
From early on, they pursued activities with an eye on overseas markets, and their 2013 debut album—produced by Ettore Rigotti of Disarmonia Mundi—was first released abroad.
It was released in Japan the following year, earning them recognition among a wide range of metal fans.
Incorporating Japanese elements such as gagaku, they continue to actively refine their unique style.
VAINBATCAVE

Formed in 1998 by members with hardcore roots, BATCAVE is characterized by an ultra-aggressive sound based on core and thrash.
With the heavy rock boom at the time, they quickly became a popular band.
They have also received high praise from overseas bands and have performed alongside a wide range of acts, mainly in the thrash scene.
Out of the GraveSIGH

SIGH pursues a unique brand of experimental black metal with an avant-garde approach that even incorporates saxophone among its members.
The band’s central figure, vocalist Mirai Kawashima, is highly proficient in languages and has an extensive track record as an interviewer of overseas metal artists.
Even people who don’t know the band’s music may have heard his name.
Their songs contain many elements that don’t surface within the usual metal context, making them a band I highly recommend to anyone looking for metal that’s a little different from the rest.
Excuse me, I’ll be leaving first.hanabie

Hanabie., who champion their own genre “Harajuku Core,” an evolution of metalcore and hardcore, are a four-member hybrid girls’ band formed in 2015.
They released the mini-album “Kaika Sengen” in 2018 and their long-awaited first full album “Otome Kaikaku” in 2021.
Known for a striking blend of screamed vocals and catchy melodies, they continue to perform energetically with live houses as their main stage.
Their skill is well proven, having taken runner-up at the national finals of Schools Out in 2017.
With powerful performances that belie their petite, cute appearance, they captivate not only metal fans but also pop listeners.
REAL EXISTENCEBAND-MAID

BAND-MAID is a distinctive band that fuses the concept of maid cafés with hard rock.
Since forming in 2013, they’ve drawn attention with songs that layer catchy melodies over intense guitar riffs and powerful drums.
Their international popularity has been rising as well, with their 2022 U.S.
tour drawing over 20,000 attendees.
They’ve also broadened their activities by making a cameo appearance in the Netflix film “Kate” and contributing tracks to its soundtrack.
This band is recommended for those who want to enjoy the contrast between fiercely catchy songs and performances in maid outfits.
The Black Swordsman of ReminiscenceDRAGON GUARDIAN

This is a heavy metal project created by the hero Arthur, aiming to fuse anime songs with melodic speed metal.
While they might seem contradictory at first glance, the two are surprisingly compatible, and the anime-style melodies feel completely natural.
With high standards in both songwriting and performance, the project is highly regarded by heavy metal fans.
AriseUNITED

Still going strong in the 2020s, they are a legendary presence in Japanese thrash metal that Japan proudly presents to the world.
Formed back in 1981, the band underwent several lineup changes before making their album debut in 1990 with the acclaimed masterpiece “Bloody But Unbowed.” In 1992, they released their brilliant second album “Human Zoo,” which rapidly boosted the band’s profile.
UNITED’s sound—where solid, aggressive riffs intersect exquisitely with melodic, heart-wrenching phrases—continues to deliver an impact that never fades.
