Japanese metal bands. From classic to unique, popular bands in the Japanese metal scene (1–10)
When Destinies AlignLOVEBITES

Among modern girls’ metal bands, this five-piece has been on an unstoppable rise.
Formed in 2016 around former members of DESTROSE, they made their major debut the following year with a self-titled EP.
Armed with a classic heavy metal sound backed by extensive experience and outstanding technique, along with an expressive, soaring vocal performance, they quickly leapt into the top tier of bands.
With English lyrics in the mix and their sights set on the world from the outset, they performed at the major metal festival Wacken Open Air in 2018, gaining global recognition.
kamikazeNoGoD

NoGoD is a visual-kei heavy metal band formed in 2005.
With leader Dancho’s unique persona and high musicality, they’ve earned strong support from fans.
Their sound is rooted in HR/HM while incorporating a wide range of genres, and they made their major debut in 2010 on King Records’ NEXUS label.
Each member takes part in songwriting, and that diversity broadens NoGoD’s musical scope.
Aiming for both metal and melodious music, NoGoD has carved out a unique position within the visual-kei scene.
Through their music and message, they continue to influence many fans.
Rain of LightMatenrou Opera

Matenrou Opera is a visual-kei heavy metal band that continues to captivate fans with its unique sound incorporating symphonic metal elements and its striking visuals.
Formed in 2007 mainly by former members of Jeniva, they embarked on full-scale musical activities after moving in 2008 to Sherow Artist Society, led by KAMIJO.
With the concept of “a fusion of the modern and traditional beauty,” they deliver a sound highlighted by Sono’s distinctive high notes and vibrato.
This band is recommended for those drawn to a musical style that blends tradition and innovation, as well as for listeners who want to enjoy both visual-kei and metal.
ENVYcoldrain

We are coldrain, a five-piece rock band from Nagoya drawing attention for our modern loud sound rooted in punk, hardcore, and metal.
We debuted in 2008 with the maxi single “Fiction” and have been active ever since.
In 2014, we made a full-fledged move overseas and achieved international success.
In 2020, we hosted our first self-produced festival, BLARE FEST.2020, which drew 40,000 attendees over two days.
Blending melodious elements into intense performances, our music is perfect for fans of heavy sounds.
THE FOLLOWERSGALNERYUS
Since their formation in 2001, GALNERYUS has leveraged Syu’s overwhelming guitar technique to grow their popularity both in Japan and abroad, becoming one of Japan’s representative metal bands.
In 2009, after Masatoshi “SHO” Ono—renowned for his piercing high-tone vocals—joined as the vocalist, they gained even greater acclaim and truly rose to world-class status.
Though they have undergone multiple lineup changes and consistently released new works—with their musical style evolving from the early days—their melodies and technical prowess encapsulate the very essence of metal.
My beloved, be prepared to die.Onmyoza

Onmyo-za’s appeal lies in their musical style that combines classic heavy metal sounds with catchy melodies under the concept of “yokai heavy metal.” Perhaps their greatest charm is their archaic Japanese lyrics, rich with classical and Sino-Japanese diction.
While there are many bands that aim for a uniquely Japanese form of metal, I believe Onmyo-za is the origin of a group that pursued that ideal so thoroughly.
After a period when their songs were frequently aired on TV through tie-ins, they have continued to steadily release new works and perform live, and their distinctive musical world shows no signs of slowing down.
The Artery SongANTHEM

Formed in Tokyo in 1981, ANTHEM stands as a leading band in Japan’s traditional heavy metal scene.
They made their major debut in 1985 and are known for their fiery, high-intensity performances.
Their sound features powerful riffs and melodic solos, occasionally incorporating elements of speed metal and power metal while consistently prioritizing melody in their songwriting.
Although they disbanded in 1992, they reunited in 2001 and have remained highly active since, earning strong acclaim from fans both in Japan and overseas as a vital presence in the Japanese metal scene.
Their energetic, passionate live shows are a must-see.
