Craft ideas to try in July for 3-year-olds
A three-year-old who loves discovering lots of new things every day.
It can be challenging for teachers to come up with fun craft activities, right?
Here, we’ve gathered craft ideas that are perfect for July.
Let’s create enjoyable projects with the children using materials and themes that evoke summer.
By using their hands and exploring colors, children can take pleasure in their own creativity.
Be sure to try a variety of ideas and enjoy a fun time together.
Because the children’s creations are treated as finished works, the term is standardized as “seisaku (制作)” throughout the text.

Fluffy jellyfish

This is a fluffy jellyfish craft that even small children can enjoy making! It’s appealing because it uses easy-to-find materials from 100-yen shops, like drain nets and tissue paper.
The step where you crumple the tissue paper into balls lets kids enjoy the texture of the materials.
You make it by stuffing the crumpled tissue paper into a drain net and tying it tightly with thread to finish.
If you thread string through the top of the jellyfish, you can also hang it as a decoration! Try filling it with tissue paper in various colors to create your very own original jellyfish.
Swaying wind chimes
As a summery craft idea for July, we recommend wobbly wind chimes.
Teachers and children can enjoy making them together, and after they’re done, the kids can take them home and keep enjoying them! You can decorate pudding or jelly cups and use them directly as wind chimes, take apart and repurpose the lids from six-piece cheese packs, or use capsule toy containers as they are—with a bit of creativity, you can turn recycled materials into lovely wind chimes! Note that making wind chimes involves a step where holes must be made, so be sure that adults handle this part.
Let the children put on stickers and draw pictures as their part of the process.
Salt painting

Sparkling, colorful salt painting is fun to make, and the puffy, three-dimensional finish is delightful.
You’ll need salt and water, containers, glue or paste, paint, brushes, and so on.
First, use glue to draw any picture you like on drawing paper.
Sprinkle plenty of salt over it, then shake off the excess.
Next, sprinkle paint onto the salt with a brush.
You can use your fingers instead of a brush if you like.
Since salt absorbs moisture, it’s fascinating to watch the colored water soak in smoothly, and observing how the colors bleed makes for a great learning experience!
Summer-themed origami
How about trying origami as a July craft project? There are plenty of ideas you can also use for summer wall decorations, like popsicles, juice, and straw hats.
It’s a perfect activity for three-year-olds whose fine motor skills are developing.
First, help them find an idea they want to make.
For parts the child finds difficult, an adult can lend a hand.
Encourage them to start with what they can do, build up small successes, and boost their motivation!
[Scissor Practice] Sea Creatures

Why not use scissor practice with your three-year-olds as part of a craft activity? Sea creatures like octopuses, squids, and jellyfish are familiar and have humorous shapes, making them popular with children.
First, the teacher should cut colored paper into the shapes of the motifs, then draw guide lines where the legs will be made.
If you draw them dark and bold, it will be easier for the children to cut.
Also prepare sheets with zigzag and wavy lines drawn on them.
The children will work on cutting along the guide lines.
Have them draw faces on the octopuses, squids, and jellyfish, too.
Once they paste each motif onto construction paper, the lively under-the-sea artwork is complete!
Making a Turtle with Paper Plates

How about making a turtle out of a paper plate? It’s perfect for three-year-olds and also good scissor practice.
First, paint the paper plate.
Set up an environment where children can focus so they can paint neatly.
Next, make slits around the edge of the plate; drawing guide lines beforehand will make this easier.
Then weave curling ribbon (suzuran tape) through the slits and wrap it around.
Wrapping both vertically and horizontally creates a turtle shell-like lattice pattern.
Finally, attach the turtle’s legs and tail, and draw the face with crayons to finish!
[Cotton Swab Stamps] Polar Bear’s Underpants

Let’s enjoy a craft activity inspired by the popular picture book ‘Shirokuma no Pants’ (Polar Bear’s Underwear).
Using cotton swab stamping to make cute patterns for the underwear and ice cream is a fun idea that will make the finished work exciting.
If the children are comfortable with scissors, have them try cutting out the parts as well.
Let the children glue the polar bear pieces and the ice cream too—their unique ways of placing them will shine through and result in wonderful, personalized creations.
Encourage them to make polar bear underwear that reflects their own style.
