Craft ideas to try in July for 3-year-olds

A three-year-old who loves discovering lots of new things every day.

It can be challenging for teachers to come up with fun craft activities, right?

Here, we’ve gathered craft ideas that are perfect for July.

Let’s create enjoyable projects with the children using materials and themes that evoke summer.

By using their hands and exploring colors, children can take pleasure in their own creativity.

Be sure to try a variety of ideas and enjoy a fun time together.

Because the children’s creations are treated as finished works, the term is standardized as “seisaku (制作)” throughout the text.

Ghosts with finger paint

Let’s make a ghost craft that’s perfect for summer, when test-of-courage events are popular! Prepare dark-colored construction paper such as purple or black, and place several blobs of paint on it.

You can use any colors, but it’s recommended to use plenty of white.

After placing the paint, put the paper into a plastic bag like a Ziploc, and use your fingers to press from the top to spread the colors.

Don’t just press hard—try gently poking and lightly dragging your finger to create different effects.

Once you’re done, take it out of the bag, attach eyes and a mouth cut out from construction paper, and you’re finished! Let the children do the paint-spreading and the placement of the eyes and mouth.

The Milky Way and Orihime and Hikoboshi

Turn a kitchen must-have—parchment paper—into the Milky Way! It’s a fun, hands-on craft you can enjoy with kids.

First, spread several colors of acrylic paint onto the parchment paper, fold it in half, and use your hands to spread the paint.

Next, open it up and flick white paint with a brush to complete the Milky Way.

Then roll the parchment into a tube, staple it, and hang Orihime and Hikoboshi motifs from twine to finish.

The tactile fun of spreading paint on parchment paper and the freedom to combine colors will give you a unique, personality-filled Tanabata decoration!

Paper plate wreath

This is a paper plate wreath that boosts your summer mood and makes you feel excited just by looking at it.

First, cut out half of the circular center of a paper plate.

Draw a watermelon on the lower half, and glue origami sunflowers and other decorations to the top.

You can also cut it out the same way and make the lower section an ocean, then decorate it with origami fish and boats.

Another idea is to cut out the center and make a pineapple.

Pack it full of summer motifs to create a tropical vibe!

[Ages 3 and up] Rainbow Craft

[Ages 3 and up] Rainbow Craft

Here’s a craft idea inspired by rainbows, featuring the beautiful light reflected through colored cellophane.

Stick small pieces of colored cellophane onto a rainbow-shaped template to enjoy a stained-glass effect.

Handling the colorful cellophane also helps children develop their sense of color.

For a more satisfying result, it’s recommended that adults prepare the rainbow template in advance.

That way, children can simply enjoy exploring colors.

Take the finished piece outside and let it catch the sunlight to appreciate its beauty even more.

Give it a try!

Piggybacking a home! Mr. Hermit Crab

[Kindergarten/Daycare] In August, carry your home on your back! Hermit Crab Art & Crafts
Piggybacking a home! Mr. Hermit Crab

A hermit crab lugging a heavy shell across the beach—you sometimes spot them when you go to the sea, right? Let’s make a picture of a hermit crab with origami.

First, prepare your favorite sheet of origami paper.

Cut it into thin strips, like narrow ribbons.

When you cut, make several strips in different lengths, from long to short.

Once you’re done cutting, glue the strips while keeping in mind the look of the spiral shell the crab carries.

If you layer the strips from long to short like a pyramid, it will resemble a spiral shell more easily.

Finally, add the face, and your hermit crab is complete.

It’s a perfect summer craft idea that will make you feel like you’re at the beach!

Osakana Maru Uchiwa

[Summer Craft] Clear and refreshing! Fish Round Fan
Osakana Maru Uchiwa

How about making a round fish uchiwa fan that feels like summer? First, cut a circle about 20 cm in diameter out of thick paper, and cut out a finger hole and a fish shape.

Next, cut a clear file to a size that will cover the fish opening and attach it to the thick paper.

Any work using a craft knife should be done by the caregiver/teacher.

Then, cut colorful cellophane and stick it on like fish scales.

Finally, layer and glue another sheet of thick paper on the back, add a round sticker for the fish’s eye, and draw freely around the edges.

When light passes through, the sparkling cellophane looks beautiful and brings a pleasant sense of coolness.

Summer-themed art projects and activities not only let children enjoy the season, they also nurture their imagination! Let’s try expressing a beach atmosphere through art to boost those summer vibes.

Kids can color freely on construction paper shaped like a beach umbrella, or tear tissue paper to resemble beach sand and glue it onto paper.

With their free ideas, what kind of beach will they create? Both children and teachers will be excited to find out.

It would also be lovely to display the children’s drawings or photos under the umbrella!
