[Songs of Kagoshima] The Heart of Our Hometown Passed Down in Song | A Curated Selection of Iconic Tracks That Capture Kagoshima (41–50)

Love in KagoshimaShimazu Etsuko

She’s from Kagoshima and used to work as a bus tour guide in Shizuoka.

It’s already her 30th anniversary since debut, and she has released many duet songs.

She sings the hidden longing and pure heart of a Kagoshima woman with both power and poignancy.

Truly a Satsuma ogojo.

It’s not weepy—there’s a certain strength to it.

Eiōrabujuri lily flowerRei Yoko

It is a folk song from Okinoerabu Island.

On the island, Easter lilies were cultivated to earn foreign currency from the United States.

Later, when trading companies cornered the market, the song came to be seen as one that boosts morale, encouraging people not to be defeated by such rough seas and to protect the island’s treasures.

I didn’t realize that such sentiments were embedded in its gentle, leisurely melody.

Cherry Blossoms of ChiranHino Mika

This is a song about the squad members who took off from Chiran as part of the Tokko (kamikaze) units.

Feelings for the young members who perished are entrusted to the cherry blossoms.

Hino’s singing, which even seems gently motherly, sinks into the heart.

It feels like a quiet warning to today’s unsettling social climate.

It’s said that this song was created when Amami was separated from Japan and placed under American administration in 1946, out of a longing to return to Japan.

I had associated Asaka with jazz, so I was surprised by this kind of gentle island song.

In the calm vocals, I can feel a quiet yearning for restoration.

YakushimaHosokawa Takashi

It sings of wishing to be like the Jomon Sugi, a World Heritage–listed cedar.

Yakushima, though a small island, is rugged, mystical, and full of diverse qualities.

It feels like an island where the desire to be manly and dignified comes together.

I think I understand the feeling of wishing to be that way.
