Making an owl-themed wall display

Here’s an owl-themed wall art idea to nurture the creativity of five-year-olds.
Cut colored construction paper into owl shapes, add wings, and use crayons to give them expressions! If five-year-olds are making them, it can be fun to include a mechanism that lets the owl’s expression change.
If you want to deepen their understanding of owls, use more realistic colors; if the goal is for the children to enjoy the activity, let them choose their favorite colors.
When displaying them on the wall, adding decorations like tree branches can make the result look more realistic.
Pacific saury in aluminum foil

One of autumn’s seasonal delights is Pacific saury (sanma).
When fall arrives, it makes you want to grill it over a shichirin charcoal stove, doesn’t it? So how about making a sanma craft as an autumn project? Roll a flyer or leaflet into a long, thin tube and wrap aluminum foil around it.
Then shape it like a sanma, add color with pens, and stick on eyes—done! Using blue and yellow gives it a realistic look, but you can also let the children’s creativity lead while looking at pictures or photos of sanma.
You could place them on construction paper with a drawing of a shichirin, or simply paste many of them together to create a lovely autumn wall display.
Making original puffy stickers

Did you know you can make your own squishy stickers using water-based markers and glue? It’s super easy! Draw a picture with a water-based marker on a clear plastic sheet or a large card case, then drip glue on top and spread it to match the shape of your drawing.
Let it dry for a day, and you’ll have a semi-transparent, squishy sticker! If a child isn’t confident about drawing, tape a sheet of paper with an illustration under the plastic sheet or inside the card case and have them color over it.
Note that this doesn’t work with oil-based markers, so please be careful.
Try making all kinds of stickers with autumn motifs like acorns and maple leaves.
A 3D dragonfly in a cosmos flower field

Here, we’ll show you how to make a three-dimensional painting featuring dragonflies and cosmos flowers.
Since drawing each cosmos flower one by one is a lot of work, we’ll make a stamp using a plastic bottle.
After stamping with a few different colors, paint the centers with yellow paint.
Next, we’ll make the dragonflies.
Tie two ribbons onto a chopstick with simple overhand knots, then draw the head and eyes on round stickers—your dragonfly is complete.
Attach it wherever you like with glue.
By changing the ribbon colors, you can create dragonflies in a variety of colors.

cotton-ball mushroom

Introducing a mushroom craft made with cotton balls—its three-dimensional, colorful pattern is super cute! First, cut out the mushroom cap and stem from construction paper.
Depending on the children’s ages, the teacher should prepare the cutouts in advance.
Next, glue cotton balls in your favorite colors onto the cap, using as many as you like and arranging them however you prefer.
Finally, combine the cap with the paper stem, and you’re done! Mix and match different colored cotton balls to make it even more vibrant.
Fallen leaves made with a coffee filter

Let’s use coffee filters to make and play with autumn leaves! First, dampen the coffee filter.
Using a spray bottle to mist it all over makes it easy.
With the filter fully moistened, load a brush with paint and apply it on top.
Even if the color isn’t perfectly even, having variations in tone actually makes the leaves look more realistic.
Once the paint is dry, cut out leaf shapes.
Adding creases to the leaves gives them a three-dimensional look and makes them appear more realistic when displayed, so it’s highly recommended.
Halloween ghost

Speaking of autumn, Halloween is a favorite among children.
How about making ghosts that even one-year-olds can enjoy? Prepare the parts for the ghosts—eyes, mouth, hands, and so on—in advance, and put double-sided tape on the back.
First, attach a sponge to the end of a chopstick and secure it with a rubber band.
Dab white paint on the sponge and use it to draw big ghosts on black construction paper.
Next, peel the backing off the tape on the parts and hand them to the children so they can stick them on.
It’s best to let them be as free as they like, both when drawing the ghosts and when placing the parts.
You’ll end up with wonderfully unique and adorable ghosts!
