Paper cup flowers

When it comes to classic Mother’s Day gifts, flowers like carnations are a staple.

How about a flower you can make with just a single paper cup? Cut evenly spaced slits from the rim down toward the bottom.

Then fold each of the resulting fringed strips inward into the cup and secure with tape.

The trick to making it look like petals is to fold each strip at a slight angle.

Once everything is taped down, your paper-cup flower is complete! Add a stem made from a straw to make it look even more like a real flower.

Pen holder made from paper clay

If you’re going to give a gift, you want it to be something they’ll use every day, right? Here’s a pen holder you can make using paper clay.

Prepare a jar that’s the right size and wrap jute twine around it to secure it.

Then apply paper clay over the twine.

Wrapping the twine helps the paper clay stay in place.

Finally, embed pieces like marbles or pretty stones into the clay for decoration, and once it’s dry and hardened, it’s finished.

Your mom is sure to be delighted with such a heartfelt gift!

Why not try gifting a handmade carnation for Mother’s Day? Make the carnation with origami, then wrap it like gift wrap using construction paper with a message of thanks.

Add a ribbon and it’s done! It’s an idea that even 3-year-olds who can use scissors can try.

Two methods for making the carnation are introduced: one by snipping the edges of a round-cut piece of origami, and another by accordion-folding a strip of origami.

Choose whichever you like.

Adding a paper doily to the construction paper will give it a more festive finish.

Just combine identical parts! This is a carnation made with origami.

To make one carnation, you’ll need four 7.5 cm sheets of origami paper.

Use three for the petals and the remaining one for the leaf.

First, fold the paper into a triangle.

Next, overlap the left and right sides to fold it in half, crease well, and open it.

Fold the left and right corners up to meet the top corner and crease; then, using those creases as guides, fold up the bottom edge on both the left and right from the center line.

Turn the paper over, and this time fold both side edges in to meet the center line.

That completes one part.

Stack and glue three parts together, then attach the leaf made with the same steps underneath to finish the carnation.

Change colors and patterns to make a bouquet—perfect for a gift.

Carnation Coaster

If you’re considering a practical gift, how about carnation coasters? Make the carnations as paper cutouts using origami, then sandwich them between the lid of a clear cup to turn them into coasters.

Adding sparkly roll stickers around the edge will make them look even more festive.

They’re very easy to make yet look great, and because they can be used every day, they’re perfect for gifts.

The impression changes depending on the cutout design, making it an idea kids will want to make over and over.

It’s also a fun way to practice using scissors.

Let’s use a paper cup to make a cute tulip trinket holder.

First, fold a green rectangular sheet of construction paper lengthwise in half.

Make cuts along the fold, then slightly offset and glue the layers together.

Attach this to the side of the paper cup to create the leaves.

Next, glue on the flower pieces you’ve cut from construction paper, add a chenille stem as a handle, and you’re done.

If you want the flower to look more vibrant, layer patterned origami paper on top.

Place a letter or a small gift in the cup and deliver it to someone special.

Let’s make carnations using paper towels and a straw.

Prepare two sheets of paper towel, draw patterns with water-based pens, then mist water over them to create a bleeding effect.

The patterns will blur away, so anything is fine! Once the paper towels are dry, cut them into quarter-size pieces, stack them, and accordion-fold.

Tie the center with a rubber band, cut both ends into zigzags, then separate the layers one by one to form the petals.

Hold a straw to the base, secure it together with several petals using masking tape to make the stem, and you’ve got a perfect Mother’s Day gift!
