disposable chopstick coaster

Hobby in Retirement: DIY (DIY from Age 70) ③ – Disposable Chopstick Coasters for My Grandchildren
disposable chopstick coaster

How about making a chopstick coaster by cutting disposable chopsticks into various sizes and attaching them together? If you roll a small ball from the top, it will travel through different paths like a Rube Goldberg machine and head toward the goal.

All you need are chopsticks, glue, and a utility knife.

The materials are simple, but you’ll need a solid blueprint.

Let's try mixing water and oil.

Let’s try mixing water and oil! People often use “water and oil” as an example of things that don’t get along, right? But if we mix them really vigorously, won’t they combine? Prepare water and oil in a clear container, and to make it easy to see, color the water.

Use a dropper to draw up some of the colored water and add it to the oil, then stir it and see what happens!

Slime that moves with magnets

To move the slime with a magnet, mix iron sand into the slime.

Place the slime on a clear file folder and try moving it with a magnet.

Its slow movement feels like watching a time-lapse of a plant growing! With a good performance, it could even be used for a magic trick.

I tried making an engine out of paper

How about making an “air engine” using leftover empty boxes and bamboo skewers? I used a straw for the shaft coupling.

Since it’s made of paper, it doesn’t slide very smoothly, but I think it’s a good project for understanding how an engine is structured.

Color experiments with red cabbage

Let’s extract the color from red cabbage and experiment by mixing it with various liquids! Red cabbage contains a lot of a compound called anthocyanin.

We’ll extract that anthocyanin as a solution.

You can easily make the solution by simmering the cabbage in a pot.

Then, mix vinegar, lemon juice, and other liquids into the solution to observe the color changes and compile your findings in a report.
