[Childcare] Summer wall display ideas: fun summer craft activities

When you think of summer, it’s the season packed with fun activities like summer festivals, swimming in the ocean, fireworks displays, and Tanabata.

You’ll want your wall displays to be wonderful, too, so they convey the joy of summer to the children.

In this article, we’ll share ideas for summer wall displays.

Alongside classics like the sea and fireworks, we’ll also introduce ideas that incorporate delicious summer foods and seasonal events.

There are ideas you can make together with the children, so they’re great to include as craft activities.

For older preschoolers, it might be nice to discuss last summer’s memories and choose a theme based on that.

Easy scratch art with oil pastels

[Nursery/Kindergarten] Easy Scratch Art with Cray-Pas: “Let’s Draw Summer Fireworks”

Let’s enjoy free expression using scratch art.

First, color a sheet of drawing paper with crayons.

The key is to fill it in with bright colors so that no white areas remain.

Next, paint over everything with black acrylic paint so that all the colors you just applied are completely covered.

Once the paint is dry, use a bamboo skewer to freely draw your picture.

As you scratch, the black layer will come off and the colorful colors underneath will appear, so kids are sure to get absorbed in the activity! To give it a summery feel, we also recommend choosing themes like fireworks or starry skies.

Stained glass-style fireworks

Stained glass-style fireworks

How about making stained-glass-style fireworks that shimmer and shine? The process is very simple—just cutting and pasting.

First, fold a sheet of black construction paper, then cut along the overlapped section with scissors.

Try cutting out several triangles.

When you unfold it, you should see a pattern that looks like a snowflake.

Next, stick small pieces of colored cellophane onto a piece of parchment (baking) paper.

Using a variety of colors will make it look more like stained glass.

Finally, glue the black construction paper and the parchment paper together, and you’re done! It’s a craft that glows beautifully when light shines through.

The galactic wall with spray paint

Let’s create a beautiful galaxy that evokes the Milky Way of Tanabata! A sparkling galaxy with twinkling stars is sure to capture children’s interest.

First, for the dark night sky with floating stars, using color spray lets you quickly cover a large area in one go.

To make the stars of the galaxy, you can flick a toothbrush dipped in white paint after spraying, or use round stickers and the like.

Another method is to place stencils made with a star-shaped craft punch or a hole punch that makes round holes before spraying; when you spray over them, only the covered areas stay uncolored, revealing stars.

Pay attention to the placement of the stars so your galaxy shines brilliantly.

Salt painting

Salt painting

Salt painting uses an everyday material—salt—that’s rarely used in crafts! Draw any picture you like on a backing sheet with white craft glue, and before it dries, sprinkle plenty of salt over it.

Shake off the excess salt, then brush on watercolor paint thinned with water, letting it soak into the salt.

You can use a brush or a dropper, or even dab the colors on with your finger for a beautiful effect.

Once the glue dries completely, your artwork will sparkle with glittering salt! It looks great even with simple patterns instead of specific pictures, so try incorporating it into your craft time.

choco banana

How about making a chocolate banana stall that kids will love? First, cut colored construction paper into tiny pieces with scissors.

Next, create the banana body using yellow construction paper, then use paint to color the parts where the chocolate sauce would be.

Once the paint dries, apply glue and sprinkle on the tiny paper pieces to look like colorful sprinkles.

After the bananas are finished, stick them onto a sheet decorated to look like a festival stall.

It will instantly give off a festive vibe.

You’ll end up with a wonderful craft that showcases each child’s unique personality!

Let’s make sea creatures out of scrap materials

Crafts made from recycled materials are a great way for kids to casually engage with eco-friendly practices and the SDGs! Try combining everyday recycled items—like empty tissue or snack boxes, gashapon capsules, cardboard, and wrapping paper—to create sea creatures.

An empty box can transform into a big fish, and wrapping paper can become beautiful fish scales—there are countless ways to use them.

Of course, you can also mix in construction paper or origami.

If everyone sticks their creations onto a large sheet of poster paper imagined as the sea, you can bring an ocean right into your room!

paper lantern

Many children are probably looking forward to the summer festival.

As an idea to boost the festive mood, I’d like to introduce lantern origami.

In this project, you make the lantern part by shaping your favorite color of origami paper into a circle and then recreate the look by combining it with a frame made from black origami paper.

It looks lovely as is, but you can also write characters on the lantern and use it as a wall decoration for events.

You can draw illustrations to make it cute, or draw a face and turn it into a lantern ghost, too.
