[Nursery/Kindergarten] New Year Craft Ideas: A Collection of Projects You Can Enjoy Even After Making Them

You want to plan New Year’s crafts at a nursery or kindergarten, but you can’t think of ideas that kids will enjoy while incorporating traditional elements… In times like these, decorations and classic toys made from familiar materials are perfect! Here, we introduce New Year-themed craft ideas ranging from lucky charms like akabeko (red cow), kagami mochi, and shimenawa, to playable crafts such as fukuwarai, kendama, and spinning tops.

They all make use of recycled materials like milk cartons, plastic bottles, and paper cups, so why not enjoy preparing for the New Year together with the children? Since the children’s creations are treated as “artworks,” we use the term “seisaku” (制作) in the text.

New Year’s shishimai (lion dance) craft

[New Year] Making a Shishimai (Lion Dance) #January #NewYear
New Year’s shishimai (lion dance) craft

This is a handmade activity that lets you enjoy and feel close to traditional events.

While assembling the face and learning the parts of the shishimai (lion dance)—eyes, nose, and mouth—children naturally develop their observation skills.

By freely combining the parts, you can create a lion with tons of personality, from smiling faces to humorous expressions.

It’s also great fun to play as a fukuwarai game, letting you fully enjoy the New Year atmosphere.

Making it together while asking, “What kind of face will it be?” is enjoyable with family and friends, and it’s perfect as a winter break craft activity.

Make it with tissue paper! Extra-large plum blossom

Perfect for New Year wall decorations too! Here are some ideas for making plum blossoms with tissue paper.

You’ll make two parts: yellow stamens and red petals.

For both, accordion-fold the tissue paper, staple it in the center, then open it up sheet by sheet.

For the stamens, make fine cuts on both sides; for the petals, round both sides with scissors before opening.

Create two types of flowers—one fully open and one bud.

It’s also recommended to make bamboo and pine with green tissue paper; adding them to the wall display will make it look more festive.

This is a beautiful seasonal craft that showcases the glossy shine and clarity unique to resin.

The video carefully demonstrates the process of tinting resin and pouring it into plum blossom shapes, and it also discusses tips for coloring and suggestions for substitute materials, making it approachable even for beginners.

As an educational element, it introduces how mixing colors nurtures color sense and how fine finger movements can promote brain development—resulting in a project that’s “fun to make and delightful to display.” A cute New Year’s craft with a satisfying sense of accomplishment.

A cute kotatsu you can make with 100-yen shop items!

The kotatsu makes its appearance when winter comes and temperatures drop.

The only downside is that once you get in, it’s hard to get out—but that gentle, enveloping warmth makes you feel so happy, doesn’t it? A kotatsu also makes a perfect motif for winter craft ideas.

Here, two ideas are introduced: one kotatsu made by placing a circular piece of fabric over a doll-sized table, and another made by cutting and shaping a square box.

There’s also a tutorial for making mandarins using decorative pom-poms and pipe cleaners, so feel free to use it as a reference and give it a try.

How about making the classic New Year’s game “Daruma-otoshi” using items from a 100-yen shop? It’s very easy to make, and you’ll end up with a toy you can enjoy over and over.

First, fill a dessert cup with small stones, put the lid on, and that will be the body of the Daruma.

Create the face base and patterns with tape, stick them on, then draw the eyes and mustache with a pen to finish.

For the mallet, stack and glue four plastic bottle caps together, then attach a wooden chopstick as the handle.

If the Daruma is too light, it won’t stack properly when it falls, so be sure to put plenty of stones inside.
