[Nursery/Kindergarten] New Year Craft Ideas: A Collection of Projects You Can Enjoy Even After Making Them

You want to plan New Year’s crafts at a nursery or kindergarten, but you can’t think of ideas that kids will enjoy while incorporating traditional elements… In times like these, decorations and classic toys made from familiar materials are perfect! Here, we introduce New Year-themed craft ideas ranging from lucky charms like akabeko (red cow), kagami mochi, and shimenawa, to playable crafts such as fukuwarai, kendama, and spinning tops.

They all make use of recycled materials like milk cartons, plastic bottles, and paper cups, so why not enjoy preparing for the New Year together with the children? Since the children’s creations are treated as “artworks,” we use the term “seisaku” (制作) in the text.

Just roll it up and stick it on! Easy-peasy kagami mochi

Let’s try making New Year’s kagami mochi out of tissue paper.

It’s just rolling and gluing, so it’s great for small children, too.

First, glue a paper sanpō (offering stand) that you cut from construction paper onto a backing sheet.

Next, tear the tissue paper into vertical strips.

Spread glue on top of the sanpō, then crumple the tissue paper into little balls and stick them on.

Finally, glue on a round “daidai” orange cut from construction paper to finish.

Drawing a little face on the orange is cute, too.

Display it in your entryway or living room to create a lovely New Year’s atmosphere.

Give it a try!

Handmade Daruma craft

@hoikuai.niconico♬ Slow and pretty pop music(120463) – STUDIO COM

This is a fun craft idea where you stick pieces of origami paper.

The materials are construction paper for the base of the daruma’s body and face, and origami paper for the patterns.

If infants or toddlers are doing this, please cut out the parts from the construction paper in advance.

For children old enough to use scissors, let them cut out the parts themselves.

Once the parts are ready, just glue them together and draw the face with crayons.

Gold and silver origami look festive and are recommended.

If you stick it onto a backing, it can also become a wall decoration.

When it comes to New Year’s games, hanetsuki comes to mind.

Let’s try making this hagoita using a milk carton.

Open the carton and remove the bottom section.

After removing it, turn it inside out and fold it in half.

If you fold the spout area, it will resemble the shape of a hagoita.

Put a wooden chopstick inside some newspaper, fold the newspaper, and it will become the handle of the hagoita.

Set that into the milk carton and secure it with tape.

Once secured, tape the top and bottom as well as the seam of the carton.

You can also glue some cute patterned origami paper on the outside.

Paper plate Daruma dolls and zodiac masks that you can easily make with kids are sure to liven up New Year’s celebrations.

Get a paper plate, paint, chopsticks, and scissors ready, and let’s start.

Cut out the eye holes in the paper plate with scissors.

For the handle, glue a pair of chopsticks together.

Paint the entire paper plate, then add patterns and decorations to the body or face area, and you’re done.

Try poking your eyes through the cutouts and taking photos for fun.

It might also be fun to make them using pipe cleaners or yarn.

How to make cute Seven Lucky Gods daruma dolls!

Perfect for wall decorations! Let’s make some cute Seven Lucky Daruma.

You’ll need construction paper cut to 6×15 cm and white paper for the face base.

First, create a glue tab along one of the short edges, then fold the construction paper in half to make a crease.

Next, align the crease with the glue tab fold and fold the paper again, then cut slits from the folded side with scissors.

The slit section becomes the body, and the remaining section is the head.

Glue the tab at the boundary between the body and head, draw a face on the white paper, cut it into an oval, and attach it.

Finally, fold in the corners of the construction paper to round them off, and you’re done! Make seven of them inspired by the Seven Lucky Gods and display them.
