[Nursing Home] Recommended for Sports Day! Lively Recreational Activities

The sports day is the big annual event at the nursing home, isn’t it?

Many residents look forward to it.

This time, we’re introducing recreational activities that adapt classic sports day ideas for older adults.

They’re recommended because they help stimulate both the body and the brain.

With safety in mind, many of the activities can be done while seated, so everyone can take part with confidence.

From exciting team competitions to activities that build a sense of unity among residents and staff, we hope you’ll host a fun sports day that brings everyone together.

Recreation using a whiteboard and rubber balls

Hilarious! Group Recreation Using a Whiteboard and Rubber Balls [Elderly Recreation]
Recreation using a whiteboard and rubber balls

It’s a recreation activity where you change the angle of a whiteboard to make it like a platform and roll balls across it.

Since you throw the ball onto the board while seated, there are moments when the ball disappears from your line of sight, which adds to the difficulty.

You need to anticipate how the ball will roll and, if you feel it will come your way, get into a catching posture—it’s a test of concentration.

If you increase the number of balls, they may collide on the board and change trajectories, which strengthens concentration even more.

Hotto Atto Nanto Taisō

“Hotto Atto Nanto” is the catchphrase of Nanto City in Toyama Prefecture.

It conveys a sense of security and comfort, giving you a feel for the atmosphere of Nanto.

“From the Green Village” is a song created to commemorate the 5th anniversary of Nanto City’s merger, and let’s move our bodies along with this song.

Despite its slow tempo, the uplifting lyrics of “From the Green Village” bring a calm, peaceful feeling.

It’s a song that resonates with older adults as well.

The rhythm is just right for seniors to move their bodies to, so please give it a try.

A game where you take balloons out of a basket

Let’s work together as a team! Here’s a game idea where you take balloons out of a basket.

Summer often brings to mind uchiwa fans, right? This time, let’s try a unique game that uses uchiwa to lift balloons out of a basket.

You’ll need a stand or table, a deep basket, balloons, and one uchiwa per participant.

Place the basket filled with balloons on the table, and have participants sit around it.

When the signal is given, everyone chants together, “Wasshoi, wasshoi,” while fanning with their uchiwa to get the balloons out of the basket.

It could be even more fun to split into two teams and compete against each other!

Many older adults are likely familiar with the folktale Momotaro.

There’s also a children’s song that tells the story of Momotaro, isn’t there? Let’s try moving our bodies to that song.

This is called slow aerobics, where you move gently in time with the music.

You can do the exercises standing, but they can also be done while seated.

It’s an easy routine for older adults who find standing difficult.

Through gentle, low-strain movements, it may also help you lead a more vibrant, fulfilling daily life.

Slow aerobics to When the Saints Go Marching In

Let's Try Slow Aerobics! ~When the Saints Go Marching In~
Slow aerobics to When the Saints Go Marching In

Aerobics—moving your body to music—can feel difficult for people who have trouble with movement.

This exercise adapts aerobics by slowing the tempo and using gentler motions, making it accessible for anyone.

Find a calmer rhythm than the original song and move your body as if buoyantly engaging your whole body.

Rather than trying to keep up with the music, it’s more important to use your entire body, so it may be best to proceed at a rhythm that suits the participants.

Rhythmic exercises with carp streamers

Song exercise you can do while seated: 'Children’s Song – Koinobori (Iraka no Nami)'. Rhythm exercises for seniors and older adults. #seniors #exercise #rhythmicExercise
Rhythmic exercises with carp streamers

Do you know the “ikarano-nami” that appears in the children’s song Koinobori? One theory says that ikarano-nami refers to the wave-like pattern formed by the ridge tiles at the peak of a tiled roof.

When you listen to Koinobori, you can imagine the carp streamers swimming as the waves of clouds and the ikarano-nami overlap.

These days, it seems we don’t sing or hear the version of Koinobori that mentions ikarano-nami as often.

Some older people may find Koinobori nostalgic.

If you do exercises themed around carp streamers, you might be able to feel the season while you move.

Try moving your body to the song’s expansive tune and melody.
