Elementary School Students: Simple One-Day Science Project and Craft Ideas

For elementary school summer break projects and crafts, we recommend starting with something your child is already interested in.

When it’s something they like, they can enjoy working on it.

Here, we introduce simple ideas for elementary school students! These are experiments and crafts you can do in a single day.

The materials are things you already have at home or can get quickly, so even if you’re short on time, no worries.

Perfect for those who are “stuck on a theme” or “looking for an easy and fun project”! Find your favorite and give it a try.

Apollo chocolate

I tried making Apollo chocolates with a glue gun!
Apollo chocolate

Let’s try recreating the long-loved classic candy “Apollo Chocolate” using a hot glue gun.

Its small and cute appearance makes it easy to incorporate into decorations.

First, press a real Apollo Chocolate into silicone rubber to make a mold.

Then simply pour melted hot glue sticks into the mold in sequence and let them harden.

By carefully choosing the stick colors and layering the tiers, you might end up with a result that looks just like the real thing.

plastic screw

plastic screw

This is a craft project where you try making resin screws using a hot glue gun.

While they take on the shape of screws, they’re not as strong as metal or wooden ones, so use them for decoration.

The process is simple: pour the melted glue into a nut, let it harden, then twist it out.

By choosing different glue sticks, you can create screws in various colors, and you can freely design the screw heads as well.

It could be fun to combine them with metal parts in decorations to highlight the contrast between materials.

Let’s extract DNA from juice

[Independent Study] Let's extract DNA from orange juice!
Let's extract DNA from juice

This is an activity that extracts DNA from orange juice by using the properties of absolute ethanol.

It’s a simple experiment that only requires pouring absolute ethanol over the juice.

You could also apply it to various juices—such as juice without pulp or mixed juices—and compare the results, which would be educational.

It lets you see a substance you normally can’t observe, making for a surprising experience.

I’ll try drawing some trick art!

This video introduces lots of handy techniques you can use when drawing.

It’s perfect for elementary school students who love to draw! Even kids who aren’t confident can create surprisingly good drawings by using the techniques shown here, so give them a try.

Among the many techniques, one especially impressive method is fixing a piece of twine to both sides of the paper with thumbtacks and using it to draw with a sense of perspective.

Perspective is especially important for landscape drawings, but expressing it well can be really difficult.

By using the twine as a guide, you can capture perspective effectively.

Create a polished piece and amaze everyone!

Let’s make a keychain with masking tape

[DIY] You can turn masking tape—all from the 100-yen shop—into a keychain! I'll show you how to make it!
Let's make a keychain with masking tape

Let’s try making keychains using easily available masking tape that comes in many patterns.

You’ll need masking tape, a hole punch, scissors, a utility knife, a cutting mat, double-sided tape, wide clear tape, black construction paper, a strap, and a ruler.

You can get all of these materials at 100-yen shops and similar stores.

The method is very simple: just layer the masking tape, construction paper, and clear tape together using double-sided tape.

Details on cutting and tips are explained in the video, so please refer to it.

It’s an inexpensive and easy science project for making cute keychains!

Resin crafts with your favorite character

Resin crafts with your favorite character

These days, customizing smartphone cases with resin and making original accessories are really popular.

Doing a science project using resin is highly recommended, too.

For example, you could harden resin in the shape of your favorite character and use it to make an original piggy bank.

You can buy resin at 100-yen shops or craft stores, so be sure to check it out.

Let’s try making invisible-ink toast

Fun Drawing Toast! (Science Experiments You Can Do at Home, May 2018 issue)
Let's try making invisible-ink toast

This is a lovely experimental idea to make your daily breakfast a bit more fun.

Use store-bought lemon juice from a supermarket to paint a picture on a slice of bread with a brush before toasting.

When you toast it as is, the painted parts turn brown, creating a surprisingly easy and magical effect.

With this, you might find a little something to look forward to before your breakfast each day.
