Herbariums have become quite popular, and this is a mini version that can be worn as a necklace.

Since it’s small, even elementary school students can arrange the flowers easily without much trouble.

It uses UV resin that cures quickly under a UV light, which you can conveniently buy at 100-yen shops.

It’s a craft project suited for upper-grade students who are interested in fashion.

Penguin marionette

[How to Make] Let's craft a cardboard “Penguin Marionette”!
Penguin marionette

Why not try making a marionette? There are many steps, so it’s best suited for upper elementary students who are good at arts and crafts.

All you basically need is cardboard and string! Make the penguin’s body, arms and legs, and any other parts you want to move out of cardboard.

Connect the joints with string—those linked parts will be able to move freely.

After making a few, you’ll get the hang of it, so it’s great for someone patient who can work on a longer-term project.

If a marionette feels too challenging, making a penguin module would be a good option, too!

This is a craft project to make a bow and arrow using a toilet paper roll.

It’s recommended for lower elementary school boys.

You’ll need a toilet paper roll, a thick straw, a thin straw, rubber bands, cotton swabs, and so on.

There are a few different materials, but since you can make it with items you likely have at home, it’s easy to enjoy.

Once the bow and arrow are ready, make a target too and have fun practicing your aim!

A house made of tree branches

A recommended craft project for lower elementary school students is building a house using tree branches.

Collect branches from a nearby grove or forest and glue them together to construct the house.

The outcome depends on the materials you find, so it helps to gather the materials first and draw a plan that uses them.

You can finish it in about two days, making it a great option even when you’re rushing at the end of summer vacation.

A vessel that uses water-based propulsion

Let’s try making a boat that moves with water.

It has a bit of a science element, like a small experiment.

First, prepare a plastic tray, a paper cup, two straws, a toothpick, paper, and vinyl tape.

Start by fixing the paper cup onto the tray, then make holes in the paper cup and the tray to insert the straws.

Once inserted, secure those spots with tape.

Fill the paper cup with water, float it in a bathtub or similar, and it will start moving.

It’s also fun to race them.

For upper elementary students and above, it should take about 30 minutes to make.

three-dimensional pyramid

Glue gun craft: Let’s make a pyramid with a glue gun!
three-dimensional pyramid

This pyramid shape, made using a hot glue gun, is striking for its three-dimensional and translucent look.

You can use it as-is for interior decor, or incorporate it into displays to create a cool, refreshing atmosphere.

Place a piece of parchment paper over a sheet with triangles drawn on it, then trace the translucent triangles with lines of hot glue along the outlines.

Fill the inside of each triangle with a mesh pattern, and repeat—sliding the parchment paper—to make four triangles.

Finally, glue them together to complete the pyramid.

You can also express your originality by choosing different colors of glue sticks.

Modern moms put a lot of creativity into making “charaben” for their kids.

How about trying it this time as a children’s craft? Depending on what you put in the bento, it can involve detailed work, so it’s recommended for upper elementary grades, but simpler designs should be doable for mid-grade kids as well.

First, have them draw what kind of bento they want in a sketchbook and choose the colors, then head to the 100-yen shop to buy resin clay and acrylic paints!

In conclusion

We introduced some recommended crafts for elementary school kids! How did you like them? It’s nice if they’re not just something you make to finish a homework assignment, but projects you can keep enjoying afterward.

If starting from scratch seems tough, using a craft kit is one good option.

In that case, try adding your own touch—like drawings or colors—to make it an even more unique, you-style creation!
