[Enjoy Summer] A roundup of games and recreational activities to enjoy at the sea and on the beach (1–10)

beach volleyball

Beach volleyball has become a fully mainstream sport.

There are various theories, but it’s said to have started when someone in Hawaii in 1914 thought it might be fun to play volleyball on the sand.

It later spread to beaches around the world and finally became an official event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Since each team has only two players, it’s easy to enjoy even with a small group.

If you head to the beach with friends, you’ll want to give it a try.

Sand really makes it hard to get a solid footing, doesn’t it!

Watermelon splitting

When it comes to classic summer and beach activities, watermelon smashing is a must! Many of you probably have fond memories of doing it as kids, right? It does require a suitable spot, so it’s not exactly something you can do easily at home.

When you head to the beach, bring a watermelon, a stick for smashing, and a blindfold, and have a blast! Sneaking in a watermelon-patterned beach ball can be a fun twist, too.

Like beach volleyball, this is one of the beach games that has developed into an official sport.

Since the footing is unstable on sand and the ball doesn’t move as you intend, it’s quite challenging, isn’t it? When doing it for recreation, use beach volleyball and keep it relaxed and fun.

Water gun battle

When you hear “water gun battle,” you might picture a simple shootout with water guns, but playing it as a team competition can get really exciting! It gets even more fun if you add water balloons as weapons.

Try enjoying it like airsoft, which lots of people have gotten hooked on in recent years! It should be interesting to set rules inspired by the hugely popular video game Splatoon and give it a try.

Of course, just a simple water gun shootout with your kids is fun too.

Sandpile Collapse

Many people played it as children: the sand mountain collapse game.

It’s a classic you always end up playing at the beach.

You use a stick-shaped object like a piece of driftwood and some sand.

First, stick the rod vertically into the sand and pile sand up around it.

Decide the turn order among the players, then starting from the first person, take turns removing sand by hand from around the stick.

Whoever makes the stick fall loses.

It’s easy to play yet gets everyone excited, so I highly recommend it.

Yoga

I’ve heard that yoga classes are held on beaches across Hawaii at dusk.

With yoga, it can’t be too noisy, but complete silence also makes it hard to focus.

The gentle sound of the waves rolling in is sure to relax the body.

Isogasa-gasa (rocky-shore scooping), a coastal tidepool/rocky shore critter-scooping activity

How about rummaging around the tide pools and getting up close with all kinds of creatures? Even small children who aren’t ready to dive in the ocean yet can easily experience the sea and touch marine life.

Creatures aren’t only in the spots you can see at a glance—they’re also hiding in places like the undersides of small rocks and in the sand or soil.

You could observe what you find and even turn it into a summer vacation project! When walking on the rocky shore, watch your step and wear boots or similar footwear to avoid injury.
