[Enjoy Summer] A roundup of games and recreational activities to enjoy at the sea and on the beach (1–10)

Sand mound pole-toppling

When it comes to classic games you can play on the beach, “sand mountain stick topple” might be the go-to.

Build a fairly large mound of sand and stick a thin rod into its center.

Use a stick thin enough and long enough to poke all the way through and still protrude.

Decide the order with rock-paper-scissors or similar, then everyone takes turns removing small amounts of sand by hand from around the stick.

Whoever makes the stick fall loses.

The fun lies in the strategy: do you take a big risk and remove a lot of sand, or play it safe and take a little? It’s best with about 2–3 players.

beachcombing

Beachcombing in Ishikawa at the end of summer!! There was sea glass, sea urchin shells, and even sakura clams washed up.

If you’re looking for a laid-back seaside activity, how about beachcombing? Beachcombing is all about picking up and observing items that have washed ashore.

You can enjoy collecting seashells and sea glass for crafts, examine mysterious drift items together, and have a relaxed yet engaging time.

Take this opportunity to observe what kinds of things you can find along the shore.

It’s also great to combine it with an environmental cleanup by picking up trash, or to use the collected drift items for craft projects.

Sea cavalry battle

Surprisingly, this “Sea Cavalry Battle” looks like a lot of fun! Enjoy a game of piggyback jousting while your feet get caught in the water and the waves toss you around.

If you fall, the sea acts like a cushion to soften the impact.

Just be careful not to get so carried away that you end up drowning.

Treasure Hunt Game

It’s a game where you search for treasures buried in the sand and compete to see who wins.

It’s easier if you set a certain area in advance.

You can enjoy it either by burying the actual prizes or by burying markers that stand in for them.

Be sure to dig up and take home all the treasures that weren’t found.

How about sand art for those who aren’t good at sports? Mix seawater and sand in a bucket to make a cement-like mixture, pack it in, and pile it up until it forms a mound slightly larger than what you want to create.

After letting it sit for a while to harden, carve the sand as if you were sculpting.

SUP

A must-see for beginners! Try stand-up paddleboarding (SUP)!
SUP

If you’re thinking about trying a water sport that beginners can enjoy, why not give SUP a shot? With SUP, you stand on a large, flat board and paddle to move forward.

At first it can feel unstable and you might fall in, but once you get used to it, you can enjoy 360-degree views and make wonderful memories.

Even if you can’t swim, SUP is fine as long as you master how to stand on the board and how to get back on if you fall off.

It’s a recommended water sport that even kids can join.

beach flag

When it comes to sports played on the beach, many people probably think of beach flags.

You start from a lying position, and whoever grabs the flag placed at a distance first is the winner! Of course foot speed matters, but so do how quickly you can get up and how fast you react to the starting signal—your explosive power is tested! The rules are simple, and you don’t need special equipment since you can substitute with other items, making it easy to enjoy.

Because it’s so simple, you can come up with all kinds of variations, so try playing with your own unique set of rules.
