We’re in the Reiwa era in the 2020s, but what’s capturing the attention of many young people is Showa-era culture.
Under the label “Showa retro,” people are incorporating Showa-inspired culture and fashion, as well as items with a nostalgically Showa-like vibe, into their everyday lives.
In particular, it’s said that the digitally native generation admires the uniquely “analog” feel of the Showa period.
In this article, we present a variety of Showa-related topics in quiz format.
We also explain some fun bits of trivia, so whether you’re from the Showa generation or from a younger generation, be sure to check it out!

Which station in Japan was the first to install a moving walkway?
- Nagoya Station
- Tokyo Station
- Osaka-Umeda Station
See the answer
Osaka
Moving walkways, which you see as a matter of course in urban subways, were first installed in Japan in 1967 (Showa 42) at Hankyu Umeda Station in Osaka’s Kita Ward. The walkway still exists today, and since Hankyu Railway calls it a “Moving Walk,” that name may be more familiar to locals.
In conclusion
As mentioned at the beginning, the 2020s are seeing a Showa-retro boom, and the culture of that era is drawing attention even among younger generations.
Since this article is in a quiz format, it can be used as brain training for seniors who lived through the Showa period, and I’d be delighted if it also serves as a chance for young people who know nothing about Showa to become more interested in that era!
