You may not remember the very first origami you folded as a child, but in this article we’ll introduce ideas that are easy to fold and can be made with just one sheet of paper.

No cutting or gluing needed—these are all simple designs that you can complete with a single sheet of origami paper.

They’re perfect for kids trying origami for the first time, and also great as a warm-up for anyone who hasn’t folded in a while!

A heart-shaped box made from a single sheet

Let’s make a cute heart-shaped trinket box that will make you want to fill it with sweets.

First, fold it into a triangle twice to make creases, then fold the top and bottom corners toward the center.

Fold the same way once more and make a wrap fold.

From here, add more creases and fold it into a heart shape.

Leave the left side as is and fold it toward the center to form the side.

When folding the right corner, shape it into a heart.

Make two and stack them to create a lidded trinket box!

Bringing out the corners to finish it as a round box is the key to giving it a cat-like look! Place the origami with the white side up and do a zabuton fold.

Flip the paper over, fold two opposite corners to the center, then roll-fold once more to crease and unfold.

Turn the paper over, fold all the center corners outward to form triangles.

Flip it over again, and use the creases you just made to stand up the edges.

Then fold the remaining corners inward to make a box.

Leave only one of the outer corners on either the right or left side unfolded to create the ears!

Here’s an origami idea for making a small dog-shaped box.

After folding the paper in half both ways into a square and a triangle to make creases, do a cushion fold (zabuton).

Using the creases, fold it into a square with the corners on the outside, then open the center of the square and squash it into a rectangle.

Repeat the same steps on the other side.

Turn and adjust the paper so the folded sections are on the inside, then fold the top corner of the new face down into a triangle.

Using the crease, tuck this section inward—this will be the dog’s ear.

Next, fold the left and right edges to meet the center line, and do the same on the back side, then fold the ears downward.

Open it out from the center and shape it, and your box is complete!

Cute bear tray

This cute bear tray can actually be made from a single sheet of origami paper.

To create the key feature—the bear’s ears—accordion-fold the top edge, flip the paper over, fold the left and right edges to the same width, then open and squash the pocketed sections at the top left and right.

Next, fold the bottom edge up to twice the width of the top fold, and fold all the corners of the folded-up section into triangles.

Fold this section back halfway to form the tray’s sides.

Then fold the ear sections inward, and tuck the two top corners under the opposite triangular flaps to finish.

You can make the ears look rounder by folding in the tips slightly.

Very easy! Flat sunflower

This is a sunflower you can fold from a single sheet of origami paper, easy enough for children to make.

It’s flat rather than three-dimensional, so it’s perfect for wall decorations.

Prepare a sheet of yellow origami paper, fold it twice to make a small square, then unfold.

Fold all four corners toward the point where the center creases intersect, and make step folds.

This part will become the sunflower’s petals.

Draw a pattern in the center on the front using a pen and a ruler to finish.

Coloring the patterned area brown will make it look even nicer.

That irresistibly puffy feel! A star-shaped box

Let’s try making an origami box with a fun shape: it has a small opening and a plump, rounded interior.

The puffy shape looks cute, and the overall star-like form makes it even more adorable.

After folding to a certain point, use scissors to cut about halfway.

When you unfold the cut piece, it becomes a pentagon.

Fold this pentagonal origami into the shape of a box.

Adjust the opening and the bottom, and you’ll have a plump, star-shaped box.

You can put in small items, of course, as well as little treats like candies or chocolates.

Here’s a very simple way to fold a box using a single sheet of origami paper.

Take a 15 cm square sheet and fold it in half twice to make a smaller square.

Fold all four corners toward the center, then fold each of the four edges toward the center as well.

Open it up once, then keep folding along the crease lines.

It’s amazing how easily a box comes together this way! Once you learn the steps, even small children and older adults can make it easily.

It’s handy for holding small items, so why not try making one with origami paper in your favorite color?
