[Childcare] Fun to Make! Recommended Craft Ideas for Spring
In spring, with new admissions and moving up to the next class, you can see children in all sorts of states—excited, nervous, and everything in between.
Many teachers are probably hoping that the children will come to enjoy their days at the preschool/kindergarten.
So this time, we’re sharing craft ideas perfect for spring.
We’ve gathered plenty of motifs that evoke the season—like cherry blossoms, tulips, and ladybugs—as well as ideas you can use for events such as Easter and Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day).
Decorate various areas to wrap your room in a spring atmosphere, and the children are sure to feel cozy and smile!
Give them a try.
Note: Since the things the children make are treated as “artworks,” we refer to them as “seisaku (制作)” in the text.

Let me introduce tulips made with a bleeding-painting technique that lets you enjoy how colors blend.
Prepare a coffee filter, water-based color pens, a spray bottle, construction paper, glue, and scissors.
Draw on the coffee filter with the color pens.
When you spray water over it, the water-based ink will bleed and blend.
Once it’s dry, cut it into a tulip shape and glue it onto a backing sheet to finish.
If you like, adding eyes made from round stickers to the tulip could be cute too!
Dandelions in a wet-on-wet painting
Using the wet-on-wet “bleeding” technique, let’s make a dandelion—an everyday flower that blooms in spring.
You’ll use water-based pens and water-resistant paper.
Shoji paper or coffee filters are recommended.
Cut the paper into a circle and draw patterns on it with pens in any colors you like.
When you’re done, mist it with water and enjoy watching the colors gently spread and bleed.
If you draw patterns so the colors can blend—or simply draw freely—the way the colors mix as they bleed will look beautiful.
Attach a base for the dandelion flower and a stem, and it’s complete.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
A wall decoration inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a picture-book character beloved by children, is colorful, cute, and perfect for spring.
First, cut circles for the body out of green and light green construction paper, and a red circle for the head, then overlap and glue them together.
Add black antennae and yellow eyes, and you’ll have a bright, vivid little caterpillar.
Decorate the wall with a big tree, leaves, and fruits that appear in the book to create a lively forest filled with lots of caterpillars.
Having the children help with the sticking will make it even more fun!

Chick and Four-Leaf Clover
Here’s an introduction to making chicks and four-leaf clovers.
Prepare paint, brushes, a palette, drawing paper, and crayons, and let’s get started.
Put paint on the children’s palms and have them do hand painting to color and create the four-leaf clovers.
Older children can try drawing chicks and ladybugs on the drawing paper.
For younger children, it’s also nice to have them paste pre-made chicks or ladybugs.
For the background paper, we recommend spring-like colors such as pink or light blue!
Puku-Puku Strawberry
Let’s make puffy, cute strawberries using tissue paper! You’ll need a clear wrapping bag, red or pink tissue paper, round stickers, and colored construction paper.
First, stuff the wrapping bag with crumpled tissue paper.
Seal the top of the bag with cellophane tape, and then tape the bottom corners so the bag forms a pointed strawberry shape.
Use round stickers to represent the strawberry seeds.
Cut out the leafy calyx shape from green construction paper and attach it with double-sided tape to finish.

When it comes to spring flavors, strawberries are a must! Here’s a strawberry craft that even young children can make.
Prepare bubble wrap, tissue paper, construction paper, and round stickers.
Shape the bubble wrap into a strawberry with the bubbly side facing outward.
Have the children crumple red or pink tissue paper and place it inside the strawberry shape you made.
Seal the opening with tape, then stick on the round stickers as strawberry seeds to finish.
For the calyx (leafy top), it’s best to cut it a bit larger.
Honey and Clover
Here’s a wall decoration idea featuring clovers that begin blooming around March and ladybugs that herald the arrival of spring.
Most clovers we see are three-leafed, but it’s said that finding a four-leaf clover brings good luck.
If you’re making a clover-themed wall, it could be fun to hide one or two four-leaf clovers as a surprise! Creating the ladybugs in red or yellow will pair nicely with the green clovers.
It might also be cute to make them using photos of children dressed as ladybugs!
