I want to make something for my summer break craft project that makes people say “Wow!” but I’d like to avoid anything too difficult.
Great news for upper-elementary school boys! In this article, we introduce intriguing craft projects with clever mechanisms you can build using everyday materials.
Even creations that look complex—like a fountain where water seems to flow upward or a spinning top that floats in midair—are actually surprisingly easy to make.
Once you finish, you can submit your project with an explanation of how it works and use it as a science project, too.

Easy-to-make moving toy crafts (1–10)
pull-back car

This craft lets you experience the fun of a car you built yourself zooming forward powered by rubber bands.
Cut corrugated plastic (plastic cardboard) to match the size of the car body.
For the wheels, use bottle caps: make a hole in the center, then pass a bamboo skewer through to create the axle.
If you firmly attach this to the body with hot glue, it will start to look like a real car.
Hook a rubber band onto the rear axle and wind it by turning the axle forward, and you’re ready to go.
When you let go, the car surges ahead under the power of the rubber band.
You can freely design and color the body, so you can get particular about the appearance too.
Using everyday materials and a simple mechanism, it’s a hands-on project that’s both fun to build and a great way to learn, delivering dynamic motion.
Marble Maze

Let’s make a cardboard maze that moves a marble with a lever! All you need are cardboard, thick paper, a knitting needle, and a marble.
The method is very simple: combine U-shaped parts with a base and just insert the maze sections.
Once you learn how to make the base, you can customize the maze part and enjoy many different patterns.
If you insert a cross-shaped piece into the lever’s movement area to prevent diagonal motion, the difficulty level shoots up! Give it a try.
pet trombone

Plastic bottles and a straw transform into a trombone! Prepare two empty plastic bottles, cut off their bottoms, and cover the cut edges with tape.
Keep the cap on the bottle that will be the lower part, and remove the cap from the bottle you’ll blow into.
Join the two bottles together, then attach a clip and a straw to the uncapped side to finish.
As you blow through the straw and slide the lower bottle, the pitch changes! Try playing different songs.
Easy-to-make moving toy crafts (11–20)
miniature car

You can even make a cool toy car using disposable chopsticks! It’s sure to boost the creative spirit of any car-loving elementary school kid.
It’s also highly recommended as a summer vacation craft project, so give it a try.
Combine cut pieces of chopsticks to build a three-dimensional mini car.
You can also attach wheels so it can actually roll! Since the material is chopsticks, it transforms into a toy car with a warm, handmade feel.
You can also have fun painting it in your favorite colors.
Handmade toy from an empty snack box

Make it with an empty snack box! Here’s how to create a pom‑pom shooting game! First, prepare an empty box that once held something like Choco Pie.
Reinforce the back by attaching a wooden stick so the lid can stay open.
Next, glue wooden sticks to the top and bottom of a wooden clip and wrap a rubber band around it.
Attach a plastic bottle cap to one end, and fix the other end to the back of the box.
Finally, stick a few small paper cups inside the box wherever you like, and you’re done.
Set a cotton ball in the bottle cap and launch it with a pop—have fun playing!
rubber band powered boat

If you’re unsure what to make for your summer break craft or independent research project, how about building a rubber-powered boat? It’s a charming craft you can make with simple materials like a milk carton, a kamaboko board, and a plastic bottle! Build a cool, moving boat and surprise your friends and teacher! The power unit is made by combining a cut milk carton with rubber bands.
Despite its simple structure, it moves steadily, so it could be fun to make them with friends and race them together.
You can also decorate the exterior of the boat however you like and try a design full of originality!
Cool rubber band gun

Let me introduce a strong and cool rubber band gun.
Prepare 17 bendable straws, a clothespin, tape, and scissors, and let’s make it.
Take two straws and tape their bendable sections together to secure them.
Attach one clothespin to the gap of the joined straws to create the base.
When bundling straws, secure them tightly so the stacked pieces don’t shift.
Stack eight straws by grouping them in sets of four, extend the bendable sections, and build the structure.
When attaching parts together, make sure the straws are firmly fixed so they don’t slip.
Once it’s finished, hook on a rubber band and give it a try!
