[Western Music] Both Speed and Bittersweet Feels! Recommended Melodic Hardcore/Punk Bands [2026]
In the 2020s, what kind of image comes to mind when you hear the music genre “melocore”? Chances are, the bands and sounds you think of vary depending on your generation.
The heyday of melocore in the ’90s, the early 2000s boom of pop punk and youth punk, the mid-2010s onward pop-punk revival—each band has had its own sound.
In this piece, we focus on melocore—short for melodic hardcore—which has become established in Japan as the abbreviation for melodic hardcore, just as the name suggests.
We’ll also look at related styles like pop punk, selecting both veteran acts and rising younger bands drawing attention in the 2020s.

Not The SameBodyjar

A four-piece band from Australia whose pop yet wistful melodies became their signature, influencing many in Japan’s melodic hardcore scene.
Since their 1994 debut they released albums steadily, but disbanded once in 2009.
They reunited in 2012 and, as of 2019, remain active.
While their sound has shifted somewhat from their early fast melodic punk, their true hallmark is, above all, the excellence of their melancholic, heartrending melodies.
What HappenedH₂O

Included on the 2008 album “Nothing to Prove.” A five-piece band formed around the Morse brothers, Toby and Todd, who are from New York and formed the group in 1991.
They are now based on the West Coast.
They play poppy, highly melodic melodic hardcore that you wouldn’t expect from an East Coast band.
GardenMeet Me @ The Altar

One band I personally expect will grow into a key player in the 2020s pop-punk revival is the all-girl trio Meet Me @ The Altar.
Signed to the storied label Fueled By Ramen—which drove the 2000s pop-punk and emo boom and launched major acts like Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Paramore, and Twenty One Pilots—they’ve drawn attention as a band formed by women of color, something rarely seen in earlier eras of pop-punk, making them a truly 2020s phenomenon.
As for the music, it’s packed with ultra-catchy pop-punk and melodic hardcore vibes, lyrics written from a distinctly contemporary youth perspective, and a playful streak that even brings in easycore elements.
Their 2021 EP Model Citizen, released via Fueled By Ramen, is a great showcase of everything that makes them compelling.
If you’re into female-fronted pop-punk, they’re a young band you absolutely should check out.
My Girlfriend’s DeadThe Vandals

Living legends of the punk scene.
The Vandals keep releasing outrageously catchy, standout pop-punk tunes.
Their unparalleled sense of humor gives them unbeatable originality.
The ideas and inventiveness they express are highly regarded by many musicians.
CovetBasement

Since its founding in 2004, Run for Cover Records has become a renowned label that has introduced many outstanding bands to the American indie, punk, hardcore, and emo scenes.
For those who love this label, the name Basement is surely a special one.
Formed in Ipswich, England, the band quickly rose to popularity by channeling the sounds of ’90s emocore and grunge through a youthful, modern sensibility.
They’ve toured Japan and have a devoted fanbase here as well.
If you’re drawn to music that pairs melodic, punk-influenced speed with a rich outpouring of introspective emotion, this is a band you should definitely check out!
