[Western Music] Both Speed and Bittersweet Feels! Recommended Melodic Hardcore/Punk Bands [2026]

In the 2020s, what kind of image comes to mind when you hear the music genre “melocore”? Chances are, the bands and sounds you think of vary depending on your generation.

The heyday of melocore in the ’90s, the early 2000s boom of pop punk and youth punk, the mid-2010s onward pop-punk revival—each band has had its own sound.

In this piece, we focus on melocore—short for melodic hardcore—which has become established in Japan as the abbreviation for melodic hardcore, just as the name suggests.

We’ll also look at related styles like pop punk, selecting both veteran acts and rising younger bands drawing attention in the 2020s.

[Western Music] Both Speed and Bittersweetness! Recommended Melodic Hardcore Bands [2026] (51–60)

The Greatest RewardIt Prevails

A hit track from It Prevails, the lyrically driven band from Oregon whose acclaimed debut album is still fresh in our memories.

It was initially released digitally only, but due to its huge popularity, it received a limited CD pressing! At the same time, a Japanese edition was also released on CD! The emotionally charged, beautifully melodic lines—so moving they’re almost over-the-top—have been powered up even further.

Highly recommended for fans of melodic/lyrical hardcore.

UnlovableWorthwhile

WORTHWHILE is a melodic hardcore band from San Francisco.

Their 2013 track “Unlovable” creates drama through a variety of beat arrangements, starting with a driving two-beat chorus.

The shouted vocals, brimming with emotion, and the heavy sound are quite weighty, but they match the song’s atmosphere perfectly, and as you listen, you’re steadily drawn deeper into its world.

It’s not just fast and energetic—the song makes you feel the meaning behind its beats.

OversteppingBelmont

Formed in 2014 by members who were still in high school, Belmont is a band from Chicago, Illinois drawing attention in the current pop-punk revival.

Their self-titled debut album, released in 2018 via Mutant League Records, made it into the Billboard 200 despite being an independent release.

Beyond the melodic hardcore-style speed and pop-punk catchiness, their meticulously crafted band ensemble—built around surprisingly technical guitars and busy, intricate drumming—delivers a level of polish you wouldn’t expect from such a young group.

Their sound, shaped by the flexible sensibilities of young musicians influenced by hip-hop and prog, is seriously cool.

The band has since signed with Pure Noise Records, home to many popular acts, and in March 2022 released their second album, Aftermath, which broadened their musical range even further.

If you want to know what’s happening “right now” in pop-punk and melodic hardcore, Belmont is a name you’ll want to remember.

Will DenyThe Dwarves

Included on the 1997 album “The Dwarves Are Young and Good Looking.” A five-piece formed in Chicago in the mid-’80s.

Perhaps reflecting their own tastes, the album cover features a nude woman.

With a crackling bass, breakneck guitars, and a shouting vocal, it’s an undeniably cool track.

The Best I Ever HadThe Swellers

Included on the 2011 album “Good for Me.” A five-piece band from Michigan formed in 2002.

Their melodic lines evoke the good old days of melodic hardcore, with driving drums and guitars, and vocals that sing boldly with a touch of melancholy—everything about them is awesome.

OverthinkingBetween You & Me

Signed to the long-standing label Hopeless Records, which boasts nearly 30 years of history, Melbourne, Australia’s Between You & Me are one of the most promising frontrunners of the next generation of pop punk.

Their energetic, pop-punk-packed 2018 debut, Everything Is Temporary, was released in Japan to high praise, leading to a successful Japan tour.

In 2021, they dropped their second album, Armageddon, and some listeners might have been surprised by the pre-release single Supervillain.

With its mid-tempo, more power-pop-leaning sound than straight pop punk, it struck me as the moment their pop sensibilities truly exploded.

The album Armageddon is likewise loaded with a diverse array of top-tier pop songs.

While it may feel a bit underwhelming to those expecting pop punk or melodic hardcore, I highly recommend it as a standout record that every lover of great melodies should hear!

Stand Your GroundWhippersnapper

Though relatively minor, this Atlanta-based band had already forged a distinctive sound by their 1998 debut.

Compared to the West Coast melodic hardcore acts, their sense of speed is more restrained, but that only makes their emotive melodies stand out more powerfully.

Listen with an ear for their skillful band ensemble, showcased through high-level musicianship.

By the way, their label, LOBSTER RECORDS, is the one that launched Yellowcard, who are also very popular in Japan.
