[Western Music] Both Speed and Bittersweet Feels! Recommended Melodic Hardcore/Punk Bands [2026]
In the 2020s, what kind of image comes to mind when you hear the music genre “melocore”? Chances are, the bands and sounds you think of vary depending on your generation.
The heyday of melocore in the ’90s, the early 2000s boom of pop punk and youth punk, the mid-2010s onward pop-punk revival—each band has had its own sound.
In this piece, we focus on melocore—short for melodic hardcore—which has become established in Japan as the abbreviation for melodic hardcore, just as the name suggests.
We’ll also look at related styles like pop punk, selecting both veteran acts and rising younger bands drawing attention in the 2020s.

Watch Me RiseHave Heart

Have Heart is an American straight edge hardcore punk band.
This song is included on their 2006 release The Things We Carry and received high acclaim within the hardcore scene.
Although they disbanded in 2009, they resumed activities in 2015 under the new name Free.
Their reasoning for the name change—“so as not to take away opportunities for attention from other young bands”—reflects their ethos.
ParanoiaA Day To Remember

Among the punk to post-hardcore scene since the 2000s, they are a band that ranks at the top in both popularity and ability.
Since their 2005 debut, they quickly rose to fame by skillfully weaving together pop-punk’s catchy melodies with hardcore-style ferocious screams and metallic riffs.
Their vocalist, Jeremy McKinnon, is also active as a highly capable producer.
Devil Don’t KnowA Wilhelm Scream

A Wilhelm Scream delivers classic melodic punk while standing out with distinctly raspy vocals and guitar solos that evoke a metal vibe.
Since the release of their first album in 2002, they’ve won a large following and become one of the flagship bands of the scene.
On this track from their 2013 album PARTYCRASHER, their unique personality is on full display.
The FailsafeMisery Signals

A popular band in the melodic/lyrical hardcore scene, led by the Morgan brothers on guitar and drums, and made up of American and Canadian members.
Among bands that debuted in the 2000s within the same style, they enjoy standout popularity.
They’ve released only four albums, but each one is hard to rank above the others.
Their songs, crafted through a meticulous band ensemble backed by advanced musicianship, are highly regarded not only by hardcore fans but also by those who enjoy progressive metal.
Engine 45The Ghost Inside

How about some melodic metalcore? This is a track by The Ghost Inside, a band formed in the U.S.
in 2004.
It’s included on their 2012 album “Get What You Give.” If you like a heavy, powerful sound, this will hit the spot.
The song conveys a burning desire to break free from the chains that bind you.
The Other SideMoving Targets

Moving Targets are a key band from Massachusetts’ underground scene in the 1980s.
Their unique style, which skillfully fuses hardcore punk with melodic guitar sounds, continues to influence many musicians today.
They debuted in 1986 with the album “Burning in Water,” bringing a fresh breeze to the alternative rock world with melodic riffs rich in open chords and emotionally expressive vocals.
In 2018, frontman Kenny Chambers relaunched the band with new members, and they continue to perform with undiminished energy.
If you’re drawn to the fusion of hardcore aggression and melody, or you’re seeking a broad, open-hearted sound that embraces everything from ’60s mod rock to power pop, this is for you.
SurroundedOf Virtue

We are Of Virtue, a five-piece metalcore band formed in Michigan.
Since signing with SharpTone Records in 2019, we’ve even performed in Japan and have been steadily growing our fanbase there.
This track is called “Surrounded,” released before we joined SharpTone Records.
The groovy guitar riff with a solid sense of the downbeat is seriously addictive.
From the aggressive shouted verses to the melodic chorus—every part stands out a cut above other bands.
The tight performance by the instrumental section in the breakdown is quintessential metalcore and is definitely the highlight of the song.
