Around age three, kids start to enjoy activities that use their fingers.

How about folding origami together with them and having some fun?

If they like animals, many children are also interested in dinosaurs.

So this time, we’re sharing some simple dinosaur origami ideas that are perfect to try with three-year-olds.

Along with famous dinosaurs, there are also some you might not hear about often—but if your child loves dinosaurs, they’ll surely know them!

Futabasaurus (Futaba Suzuki-ryu)

Futabasaurus (Futaba Suzuki-ryu)

Let’s fold a Futabasaurus using two sheets of origami paper.

First, fold one sheet using the kite base.

With the narrow end at the bottom, flip it over, then fold the bottom corner up to meet the top corner.

Turn it back to the front, open the sides and squash fold them.

Fold the top layer down, then flip it over.

Fold the top corner down to the center line, open it back up, then fold along that line twice.

Fold both side edges in to meet the center.

Take the second sheet and fold it into a triangle twice; open it once, then fold both side edges to the center line.

Fold the top area down diagonally so that the folded section sticks out to the outside.

Insert the first model into the center of the second, tuck the parts that are sticking out to the inside, then fold the whole thing in half to the outside.

The narrow end will be the head, so make an inside reverse fold on the opposite end to form the tail.

Finally, make a cap (cover) fold on the narrow tip to shape the face, and your Futabasaurus is complete!

Barking dinosaur

I’ll show you an origami dinosaur that opens its mouth when you pull its cheeks! Take one sheet of double-sided origami paper.

On the front side, fold in half into a square both ways to make two creases.

Flip it over and fold diagonally both ways to make two triangle creases.

Fold the bottom corner up to about 1 mm below the center.

Fold the edge along the first crease, and fold the other two corners the same way.

Fold the remaining left and right corners to the center and crease, then fold the other corners to the center and crease as well.

Fold the first corner into a triangle, aligning it with the first crease, then fold it to the center; do the same on the opposite side, folding to the center.

Fold the upper left and right corners into triangles—these will be the dinosaur’s eyes.

Turn it over and fold in all four corners, then flip it back and open up the eye sections to make them larger.

Round the inner bottom corner to form the tongue, and you’re done!

Dinosaurs made with accordion folding

Here’s how to make a simple accordion-fold dinosaur! You’ll need a sheet of origami paper cut in half, dinosaur parts, and glue.

First, fold the origami paper back and forth in an accordion.

Apply glue to the end of the accordion fold, press it firmly together halfway, then open it up to make a fan shape.

That completes the body.

Finally, glue on the dinosaur’s face, tail, legs, eyes, and other parts.

For the eyes, round stickers or drawing a face with a pen are both cute options I recommend.

Prepare the parts together with your child and give it a try!

I’ll show you how to fold a dinosaur! First, prepare a piece of larger origami paper cut in half, then proceed using the Kannon (petal) base.

Fold each of the four corners toward the center to make crease lines.

Open the front corner along the crease and squash it flat, then fold down the single layers on the left and right.

Fold the top the same way, and fold the left and right upward.

Fold twice so that all four edges stand perpendicular to the center.

Turn it over, fold the four edges toward the center, then fold the whole model in half outward.

Tuck in the tip on one side to form the neck.

Finally, slightly overlap-fold the tip of the neck and the tips of the legs, and your dinosaur is complete! Draw a face with a pen.

Kentrosaurus

[Origami Dinosaurs] I tried folding a Kentrosaurus
Kentrosaurus

The plates on its back are smaller than those of Stegosaurus, and the shoulder spikes are said to have protected it from enemies.

Kentrosaurus was a quadrupedal dinosaur and is believed to have lived by feeding on plants.

When making the shoulder spike sections, fold them into sharply pointed triangles and add creases to create a three-dimensional look—this will clearly express Kentrosaurus’s distinctive features.

Once finished, it would be fun to stand it up and make it walk, or compare it with photos in a dinosaur encyclopedia.

For colors that match the image of Kentrosaurus, green or brown origami paper is recommended!

Fukui-saurus

Fukui-saurus

Here’s how to fold a Fukuisaurus using two sheets of origami paper.

First, fold one sheet using the “octopus” base.

Turn it over, position the narrow end downward, and fold the bottom corner up to meet the top corner.

Turn it back to the front, open both sides and squash fold them, then fold down the top layer.

Fold the model in half vertically so the folded face is on the outside, then perform a cover fold on the folded side to shape it, creating the tail and legs.

Make an inside reverse fold on the opposite side to form the head.

For the second sheet, fold it into a triangle twice, then open it once.

Fold the left and right edges to the center crease and unfold.

Fold the top corner down to meet the bottom edge to create a guideline.

Using that crease, fold the bottom edge up.

Next, fold the bottom edge up at a diagonal so it’s divided by the left and right creases, open, and squash fold.

Fold it in half inward, then tuck both ends inward to form the legs.

Finally, combine this piece with the first model and adjust the shape to finish!

Pterodactyl

Pterodactyl

I’ll show you how to fold a pterodactyl with moving wings! First, fold into a triangle twice, then open once and place it with a corner pointing down.

Fold both side edges to align with the center crease.

Fold the top two corners straight down to form triangles, then fold along the creases so that the white side shows.

Flip it over and repeat the same folds, then fold the model in half from the center so the creases are on the outside.

Fold so that the lower edge of the white side meets the center line at a right angle, then make an inside reverse fold along the line.

Fold the tip of the folded section down so that it meets the center line, then make another inside reverse fold.

Squash-fold the upper part of the folded section, and fold so that the lower edges of the white sections on both sides are vertical.

Finally, fold the colored section back down and shape the wings—and you’re done!
