[For 4-Year-Olds] Fun to Make! A Collection of Halloween Craft Ideas

It’s the Halloween season that 4-year-olds love! Here, we’ll introduce Halloween craft ideas you can enjoy together with 4-year-olds.

We’ve gathered only projects you can move and play with, like spiders and ghosts.

They’re made with familiar materials and include lots of engaging tricks—blowing air to make them move or using the power of rubber bands—to really grab children’s interest.

Through making these, kids can grow their creativity and expressive skills, while the excitement and thrills spread as they work with friends.

It’s sure to be a special time where everyone can share the fun of Halloween.

Because the children’s creations are treated as works (artworks), we use the term “seisaku” (制作) in the text.

Jack-o’-lantern made with a footprint

In October, many children look forward to Halloween.

So here’s a craft I’d like to introduce: “Jack-o’-lanterns made from footprints.” There are two main steps.

First, prepare white paper and orange paint.

Then apply the paint to the feet and press footprints onto the paper in a row.

This should create a silhouette that looks like a pumpkin.

Finally, add eye and mouth pieces to the pumpkin, and it’s done.

One of the charms of this idea is that when you look back at it later, you can feel how much the child has grown.

Playable Ghost

Why not try making a cute little ghost you can wear on your finger? It’s perfect for Halloween-themed events or pretend play at nurseries and kindergartens.

Fold a white sheet of origami paper into a triangle to make a crease, then open it.

Fold the top and bottom toward the center, flip it over and fold, then fold the left and right corners along the lines.

Fold the left and right corners again to create the ghost’s hands, glue the back layers together, and it’s done.

This is a great craft idea for two-year-olds, letting them enjoy the ghost gently swaying.

Pumpkin staff

Pumpkin staff

Let’s make a pumpkin wand you can use as a toy or decoration! Open the pre-creased origami and fold each side toward the center.

After folding up the bottom, fold the top corners toward the center.

Fold in the left and right sides, then fold the top piece back down to complete the pumpkin body.

Have the children draw whatever pumpkin face they imagine to let their creativity shine.

Make a cute item by attaching it to a wand: slightly offset the paper when folding it in half, then roll it up tightly to form the stick and connect it to the pumpkin.

No scissors needed—an easy craft idea even for 3-year-olds.

Pumpkins made with torn-paper collage

Pumpkins made with torn-paper collage

We’re introducing a fun torn-paper pumpkin craft.

The method is very simple: freely tear orange and yellow origami paper into pieces.

Then glue the torn pieces onto a sheet of construction paper that’s been cut into the shape of a pumpkin.

Finally, draw the pumpkin’s face and you’re done.

Tearing paper play helps develop children’s fine motor skills and provides great sensory stimulation.

It’s very easy and requires only a few supplies, so enjoy making a cute pumpkin together with your one-year-old!

Here’s a Jack-o’-lantern craft idea using a paper plate and yarn.

Cut out the inner circle of the paper plate, then punch evenly spaced holes around the edge.

Make a loop at one end of the yarn and tape it to the top of the plate; thread the other end through the holes in any pattern you like.

Create a pumpkin face from construction paper and candies from colored film, then decorate the plate and yarn with them.

Your Jack-o’-lantern is complete! Hang it on the wall by the yarn loop and enjoy.

Wobbly Ghost

[Craft Activity] Let's make cute little ghosts that wobble and sway!
Wobbly Ghost

A wobbly, swaying ghost made from a plastic bag is perfectly Halloween-y and fun to make using only familiar materials.

After cutting off the handles of a plastic bag you got from the supermarket, round the bottom to shape the ghost’s head, then connect the ghost to a pair of chopsticks with string—and you’re done.

It’s easy enough for small children to make.

Drawing a ghost face on the bag will add even more originality.

You’ll need to be careful at the point when scissors are used, but it’s a simple craft that’s great for helping kids get used to making things.

A delightful Halloween treat! Let’s make a shaker lollipop.

Prepare a round box like the kind used for 6P cheese, and remove the bottom.

Cut a card case to the same size as the bottom, stick on a Halloween-themed illustration, and fit it into the frame.

Cut a rectangular slit in the lid and secure a straw to use as the handle.

Attach a Halloween illustration to the flat surface, add some candy, then cover it with the container that has the card case fitted in.

Wrap it in plastic and tie a ribbon to finish.

If adding candy is tricky, beads or decorative pom-poms could be a cute alternative!
