[For 5-year-olds] Let’s make origami! A collection of fun folding ideas

Here are some origami ideas for five-year-olds.

By the time children are five, you’ll often see them helping each other with parts they don’t understand or folding while looking at an origami instruction book.

While respecting each child’s pace, teachers should also enjoy working on these together with the children.

We’re introducing lots of ideas—ones you can fold and play with, as well as cute ones to decorate with or wear—so once the origami is finished, be sure to have fun playing with the children!

A fox that also serves as practice for riding the rhythm.

Here’s how to fold an origami fox, which is also good practice for using glue.

First, take one sheet of origami paper, turn it over, and fold it into a triangle.

Fold the top edge back slightly, then flip it over.

Next, fold the left and right sides upward toward the center to form the face.

Then, take another sheet of origami paper and fold it into a triangle in the same way, and fold the triangle’s tip diagonally to make the body.

Now the body is done.

Finally, attach the face and body together with glue to complete the fox! When using glue, please have an adult assist.

It’s also recommended to draw the face with a pen or add stickers and use it for autumn wall decorations.

How to fold a full-body Kumamon

We’ll show you how to fold a full-body version of the local mascot Kumamon! Prepare one sheet of black origami paper.

First, place the paper color-side down and fold it in half into a triangle.

Fold both corners up toward the center, then fold the top half down.

Next, to make the ears, fold both corners down at a slight diagonal.

Use a pencil or similar tool to curl and puff out the corners to shape them nicely.

This part can be fiddly, so for 3-year-olds you might simplify it by just folding without the shaping.

Fold both sides in diagonally to suggest the body.

Finally, stick on white round stickers or circles cut from paper, and draw the face with a pen to complete Kumamon!

Here’s how to fold a cute fox made by halving an origami sheet.

First, turn the origami paper over and fold it in half.

Cut along the center crease to make two pieces.

Please have an adult assist with the scissors.

Take one of the cut pieces and fold it in half with the back side facing out.

Fold one edge toward the center to make a crease, then fold the other edge to meet that crease.

Using the folded side as a base, fold both ends up diagonally.

Flip it over and fold both ends in to meet the center line.

Fold both corners up to form the ears, adjust the shape, and the face is done.

Now let’s make the body with the other piece.

Turn the origami over and fold it in half, then fold the bottom edge all the way up.

Flip it over and fold the same way.

Adjust it to form the body and tail shapes, and the body is complete.

Finally, draw the face with a pen.

Please prepare two sheets of yellow origami paper and one sheet of red origami paper.

Fold both yellow sheets into triangles.

With one of them, turn the base to the top and fold both side edges diagonally inward to make the fox’s face.

With the other, keep the base at the bottom and fold up the left and right corners in the same way to make the fox’s body.

Attach a nose to the bottom corner of the fox’s face, draw the eyes, and glue the face to the body.

At this point, if you attach a diamond-shaped piece cut from the red origami to the back side of the corner where you placed the nose, lifting that nose corner will make it look like the fox is opening its mouth.

An easy fox for everyone

Here’s an origami idea for making a fox with a wide face.

Fold the paper into a triangle twice, then unfold it once so it’s only folded once.

Fold the top corner down to meet the center of the bottom edge, then fold the left and right corners up diagonally toward the inside.

It works well if you fold them so they come slightly inside the edges of the small triangle created by the top fold.

Turn the paper over, draw the face with a pen, and you’re done! Since it only takes five folds, it’s a simple process that’s perfect for a three-year-old just starting with origami.

Here’s an easy way to fold a bear that even 3-year-olds can make.

Prepare one sheet of origami paper and a black pen.

First, fold it into a triangle, then fold again so the corners line up.

Fold both corners upward at a diagonal.

Fold the top corner down to form the head.

Next, take the top layer and make a mountain fold, then fold diagonally twice.

Fold both corners in just a little.

Round off all the corners, imagining the ears and face, and finally make a mountain fold on the bottom corner to finish.

Draw any face you like with a pen.

Using round stickers is recommended too.

Plump goldfish

Let’s make a cute, plump goldfish.

Up to a point, this follows the same steps as folding a balloon.

Fold the origami so that two triangles overlap, then fold the two corners of one triangle up to meet the top corner.

Fold the left and right corners of the diamond formed in the center toward the center line, then fold down the two corners you just lifted and tuck them inside.

Turn the paper over, fold the left and right edges of the triangle toward the center line, and on the left side only, fold the bottom corner up at a right angle.

Glue it to the right side as is to form the tail fin.

Blow air into the balloon section to inflate it, add eyes, and your goldfish is complete.
