[For 5-year-olds] Let’s make origami! A collection of fun folding ideas

Here are some origami ideas for five-year-olds.

By the time children are five, you’ll often see them helping each other with parts they don’t understand or folding while looking at an origami instruction book.

While respecting each child’s pace, teachers should also enjoy working on these together with the children.

We’re introducing lots of ideas—ones you can fold and play with, as well as cute ones to decorate with or wear—so once the origami is finished, be sure to have fun playing with the children!

If you can fold a crane, you can make this! Here’s an origami horse idea.

First, fold the top and bottom corners of the paper together to make a triangle, then fold the left and right corners together to make another triangle.

Next, squash the open pocket into a square.

Place the paper so the flippable corner is at the bottom, then fold the lower left and right edges to the center line to crease them.

Using those creases, squash the squares on both sides into diamond shapes.

Lift one corner of the diamond to flip the layer, and you should end up on the side where the tip is split into two.

Gently open the middle of that split to indent it and form the ears.

Finally, make a curled fold on the remaining lower tip, and your horse is complete.

Let’s make a freestanding horse out of origami.

We’ll be making a cut partway through, so please have scissors ready.

First, fold the paper into a triangle twice, squash the pocket to form two squares.

Place the paper so that the flap side points down, then fold the lower left and right edges to the center line to crease them.

Flip it over and do the same on the other side.

Fold down the top corner into a triangle to make a crease as well, then make a straight cut on both sides from the lower corners up to the base of the triangle you just creased.

Open out the two lower sections to the sides as you fold them upward, then fold the diamond in half along the vertical center line.

Repeat the same steps on the back.

Use an inside reverse fold at the top to form the head and tail, and use the remaining lower part to shape the legs.

Here’s a recommended idea for when you want to make a three-dimensional horse.

Since there are many steps that involve creasing, practice aligning the edges and corners carefully before you take on the challenge.

Also, because there are quite a few fine folds, if a child is attempting it, it’s better to use larger origami paper.

Basically, you’ll fold along the creases, but you will also use inside reverse folds and outside reverse folds when forming the body and head.

It might be difficult to complete in one go, so try breaking the process up over a few days to finish it.

Easy and simple! Horse origami

Here’s an idea for making a horse from a single sheet of origami paper.

First, fold the paper into a triangle and crease it, then open it up.

Next, fold all four edges toward the crease, and fold the overlapped section so the corners stand up—this folded section will become the front legs of the horse.

Fold the paper in half along the crease so the front legs are on the outside.

On one side, make three inside reverse folds to form the neck and head.

On the opposite side, use a squash fold to create the hind legs.

Narrow the edge in front of the front legs by folding it inward, then tuck the pointed corners of the neck and the tips of both legs inward to finish.

Here’s a simple origami idea for making a horse’s face.

First, fold the paper into a triangle by bringing the top and bottom corners together.

Next, fold it into a triangle again by bringing the left and right corners together.

Unfold once to return to the single triangle, then fold the left and right edges down to meet the center crease.

Flip the paper top-to-bottom, then slightly open the previously folded corners on both sides to form the ears.

The remaining section will be the horse’s face, so tuck the left, right, and bottom corners inward to refine the shape.

It looks like it’s made from a single sheet, but it’s actually made from two sheets of origami, separated into the head, body and tail, and legs.

First, fold the origami into a triangle to make a crease.

You’ll be using this crease as you fold, so be sure to align the corners carefully.

For the head, body, and tail, flatten the pocketed sections and use inside reverse folds to shape them.

For the legs, start with a zabuton fold and then make fine creases, folding the corners into triangles to form the four legs.

Once the parts are complete, overlap the legs onto the body, glue them in place, and finish it as a horse.

Can also be used as a decoration! Horse origami

Enjoy displaying it as a decorative piece! Here’s an idea for a beautifully standing origami horse.

First, fold the origami paper in half into a square twice.

Then, take the two liftable corners on each side and fold them up into triangles so their tips meet diagonally.

Fold the sides of the raised triangles along the creases, and while lifting the corners, squash-fold the overlapped sections.

This will be the horse’s front legs! Once both sides are done, open the paper and fold it in half so that the folded sections overlap on the inside.

Next, reverse the fold so the folded sections are on the outside, and open the crease of the halved fold.

Using the center crease, fold the paper into a V shape, then form the head and back legs at the left and right ends.

The final steps involve finer work, including opening and refolding some parts, so it’s best for an adult to assist.
