Mito Komon Exercise

This is an exercise routine that moves the whole body to the theme song of Mito Kōmon, a staple of period dramas.

Because it uses a song everyone knows, the music itself is enjoyable.

Despite its powerful feel, the song’s gentle tempo is another key point; moving your body while catching the rhythm helps you generate strength.

Once you get used to moving along with the music, doing it while singing is also recommended, as it is expected to help improve cognitive function.

One of the games anyone can enjoy, from children to the elderly, is playing cards.

There are many card games like Old Maid, Concentration, Sevens, and Millionaire.

They’re all easy to play, so pick your favorite and have fun! Card games often require quite a bit of thinking, so they’re great for brain training, too! Besides games, playing cards are also a big hit in magic.

Flip-over game

Prepare double-sided cards using cardboard and origami so each side is a different color.

Lay the cards out, and flip them to turn them into your designated color.

You can only use one hand! Play one-on-one, and whoever flips the most cards to their own color within the time limit wins.

But don’t let your guard down just because you’ve flipped a lot—until time is up, your opponent will keep flipping them back to their own color!

Momotaro Card Game

A Momotaro card game that anyone can easily enjoy while stimulating the brain!
Momotaro Card Game

This is a game that uses cards featuring characters from Momotaro.

There are cards for Momotaro, the Dog, the Monkey, the Pheasant, the Red Ogre, the Blue Ogre, and the Yellow Ogre.

From a set of randomly shuffled, face-down cards, you draw three at a time.

You win when you complete one of the following sets: three Momotaro cards; one each of the Dog, Monkey, and Pheasant; one each of the three ogres; or any of those three combinations.

You keep returning unwanted cards face down to their spots and drawing a new card, repeating this until you complete a set.

It helps to remember where you placed the cards you discarded, and that makes it a good brain-training game.

Othello

Othello is a game where you use black and white discs to expand your territory.

It’s simple, but the way you play each move can determine the outcome.

To start, place the black and white discs on the four center squares so that they are diagonal to each other.

If you’re playing black, for example, you place a black disc so that you sandwich one or more white discs between that disc and an existing black disc, then flip the sandwiched white discs to black.

Players keep flipping and being flipped like this, and when all the squares are filled, the player who has converted the most discs to their color wins!

Shiritori Card Game

Haven’t many older adults played shiritori at least once? Here’s a familiar shiritori-style card game for seniors.

Prepare cards with each of the 50 Japanese syllables written on them, and deal five cards to each player.

Place the remaining cards in the center and draw one card to start.

Think of a word that begins with the syllable of the drawn card, so that the last letter of your chosen word matches one of the cards in your hand.

Adding a rule like “use three-letter words” makes it even more fun and can help stimulate the brain.

The first person to use up all their cards wins.

Let’s all enjoy thinking of words together while we play.
