Hide-and-seek at the sports day?

Parents and children will both get excited! Here are some ideas for playing hide-and-seek at a sports day.

Hide-and-seek is usually a game played during everyday playtime, right? This time, let’s try it at a sports day.

It’s especially recommended for preschools and kindergartens where children wear the same hats and gym clothes for the event.

After hide-and-seek, setting up a corner where parents and children can deepen their bonds through dance or interactive play will make things even more lively.

Give it a try!

Simple Parent-Child Activities for Infants and Toddlers (1–10)

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Race

This is a game inspired by a picture book that depicts a hungry caterpillar eating various things every day and growing.

Using the holes the caterpillar passes through and three-dimensional food illustrations as references, you create a course that follows the story.

When children pass through the food illustrations made from items like hula hoops and cardboard, stay close and keep watch to ensure safety.

After the caterpillar finishes eating and “becomes a butterfly,” have the children wear a butterfly illustration and carry them as if they’re flying through the sky to the finish line.

It’s a perfect activity for strengthening bonds with children.

Penguin Race

No.11 [Parent–Child Play / Motor Skills Improvement] “Penguin Race” Waddle waddle, humorous—oh my, the balloon is floating here and there! Don’t lose, little penguin!
Penguin Race

Here’s a game where you walk while holding a balloon between your knees.

Since the way you walk looks like a penguin, it’s called the Penguin Race.

If you squeeze too hard, the balloon might slip out from between your knees and float away, making it hard to reach the finish line.

Split into teams and pass the balloon to the next runner like a baton.

You could also skip teams and run it as a tournament or round-robin for extra fun.

It’s a race that can be enjoyed as a parent–child activity too, so give it a try!

the eye of a typhoon

Let us introduce the popular parent-child race often held at kindergarten and nursery school sports days: “Eye of the Typhoon”! It’s a race where teams of four hold a long pole and run along a course, with the rule being to circle around the set cones once.

When done as a parent-child event, two parent-child pairs form one group.

When circling a cone, the person closer to the center and the person on the outside will naturally run at different speeds, so it’s recommended that the faster adult runs on the outside.

How about synchronizing your pace as two parent-child pairs, running with smiles, and livening up the sports day?

Big Pants Relay

Big Pants Relay

The Dekapan Relay is a race where two people wear a giant pair of pants together and compete.

Because it’s an event where parents and children cooperate to pass the baton, it’s perfect for sports days at kindergartens and nursery schools.

Try to run at a steady pace by communicating with each other.

Please help support the children who may be nervous on the big day.

Dividing into teams will get the crowd cheering even more.

It’s a parent–child event where you can feel your children’s growth up close.

Strengthen your bond with well-coordinated movements as a pair!

Get into the hula hoop.

Oct 10, 2015 – Sports Day. Keiichi, parent-child event: “Get into the hula hoop.”
Get into the hula hoop.

A game where hoops are laid out randomly on the ground, everyone walks around and around the hula hoops, and when the music stops, you jump into any hoop.

To put it simply, it’s the hoop version of musical chairs, played by parents and children together.

You can use hula hoops, but it’s more exciting if the hoops vary in size—big and small—so why not make your own with newspaper and vinyl tape? If you can’t get into a hoop, you’re out.

The last parent–child pair remaining wins!

Crawling race

Heartwarming mishaps galore! Baby crawling race
Crawling race

When it comes to classic events at kindergarten and nursery school sports days, the crawling race is a staple.

As the name suggests, it’s a competition to see how fast the little ones can crawl.

Parents wait at the finish line, calling to their children or showing them toys and snacks to motivate them.

It’s not only an event parents and children can participate in together, but also a chance to reaffirm their trust and bond.

Regardless of the ranking, many parents find themselves moved to tears simply when their child reaches the goal.

If you include this event, be sure to prepare soft mats so the children don’t get hurt.
