That distorted, weighty bass sound is irresistible.

It’s a track by the mixtured rock band UVERworld, known for producing numerous hits like “Hakanaku mo Towa no Kanashi” and “Shaka Beach ~Laka Laka La~,” released in 2011 as their 19th single.

It drew attention for being used as the opening theme for the anime Blue Exorcist.

It’s a powerful message song that declares a desire to keep charging toward what you pursue no matter how old you get, and listening to it stirs a passionate feeling in you too.

You can hear a thick, muscular bass that firmly underpins the entire band sound—highly recommended.

Amid a sludgy, oozing groove, the bass darts around freely in all directions.

Composed by bassist Wakazaemon and released in 2019, this track feels like turning one’s inner downer vibes straight into music—something I think will especially resonate with younger listeners.

From a bass-playing standpoint, the wah-inflected phrases really stand out.

The contrast between the quirky, slappy-pecking tone and the heavy, thudding sections is just perfect.

Get a taste of Wakazaemon’s originality for yourself.

Maximum the Hormone is a four-piece rock band that continues to lead Japan’s loud rock scene with their eccentric songs and powerful live performances.

Their 8th single, “Zetsubou Billy” — released as a double A-side with “F” — was selected as the opening theme for the music variety show Music Fighter.

The bass alone offers plenty to dig into, from the thick, driving basslines to blistering slap passages.

It’s an aggressive rock tune whose rapidly shifting ensemble sections will crank up your adrenaline.

Maximum the Hormone’s “Hawatari 2 Oku Centi” kicks off with a satisfyingly distorted bass sound.

The song has extremely drastic tempo changes, and the moment it shifts into a high-speed two-beat, the 16th-note phrase on the open third string is irresistibly cool.

If you’re playing this song on a 4-string, tune only the 4th string down two whole steps to C.

That gives you an alternate tuning of C-A-D-G from the 4th string up, so it may take some time to get used to.

Also, since the tuning drops significantly, I recommend using heavier gauge strings to maintain tension.

A city-soul band formed in a University of Tokyo music circle, Penthouse delivers their second major digital single.

Written as the theme song for the TV drama “Crosstail: Detective School,” this track stands out with its vivid melodies featuring male–female twin vocals.

The bassline, moving with a delicate rhythm in sync with the drum beat, creates the groove of the song while enhancing the melody.

Its contrast with the piano phrases is exquisite, making for an invigorating piece.
