SPECIALZKing Gnu

King Gnu is a four-piece rock band that thrills fans with a hybrid sound that channels their high-level musicianship and broad musicality into J-pop.

Their 7th single, “SPECIALZ,” was chosen as the opening theme for season 2 of the TV anime Jujutsu Kaisen (the Shibuya Incident arc).

Amid the dark ensemble, the sinuous, pulsing bass line is especially ear-catching, creating a strong presence and groove despite its sparing notes.

It’s an addictive rock tune that lets you feel the depth of bass playing.

The work embodies a strong resolve to break past values and move toward the future while facing another self.

Akira Akira’s bass drives the songs forward with a simple yet powerful tone that pulls the sense of speed along.

The way the range suddenly opens up in the B-melody is seriously cool, too.

Highly recommended for anyone looking to meet a new version of themselves!

Tatsuya Kitani is a singer-songwriter who is active in a wide range of roles—including as a bassist in his own band and a support member for Yorushika—and he also has a background as a Vocaloid producer.

The title track of his third EP, “Ao no Sumika,” was chosen as the opening theme for the TV anime Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory/Premature Death.

“Zanki” by Zutto Mayonaka de Iinoni.

opens with a crisp, treble-rich slap that feels great.

The slap phrases in this track are extremely challenging, and it seems tough to replicate them without using the so-called rotary technique—thumb down, then thumb up, followed immediately by a pull.

It also packs in a variety of other techniques, such as raking (playing multiple strings with a single finger) and ghost notes that add rhythmic decoration without a defined pitch.

A must-listen for any bassist!
