A tori-niwa is a long earthen-floor corridor inside a house—an old-fashioned space that feels as if the street extends into the home.

In this space, you can sense not only people and goods passing through, but also air from outside.

The commercial shows how such tori-niwa have long connected people in their daily lives.

It highlights a unique yet warm system that these towns have cultivated.

The director tells Yakusho that, in this scenario, he lives in the house with a beautiful woman, and Yakusho can’t help but grin a little.

But when he opens the door to the room where the beauty is supposed to be, there’s a cat! Yakusho protests that it’s just a cat, but the director declares, “She’s not a cat—she’s Daiwa-Nyan!” It’s a commercial that will have you grinning at the adorable cat.

The theme is winning a film festival trophy, and the movie shown within the commercial is actually a product-promotion ad—making for a rather convoluted setup.

The punchline at the end is hard to make sense of, but for some reason it still makes you laugh.
