[Evolving Daycare Services] A summary of engaging recreational initiatives that excite older adults
In recent years, initiatives aimed at a new, evolved style of day service—different from the traditional model—have been gaining attention.
While many people still prefer conventional day services, there are surely those who would like to try an evolved version.
What we’re introducing here is a fresh concept that incorporates unusual recreational activities actually conducted at senior facilities across Japan.
“If you want to create a new environment where users can enjoy themselves even more,” we think these ideas will serve as helpful inspiration.
Be sure to read to the end!
By adopting new ideas, you can build even better facilities.

Adult School

This initiative is designed around the concept of school life and classroom scenes, with the goal of promoting independence and increasing motivation for daily living.
The format, which feels like taking a class in front of a blackboard, may evoke a sense of nostalgia.
The act of reading aloud today’s date helps develop an awareness of dates and time, while raising one’s hand when knowing the answer to a question energizes the setting.
Beyond the aspects of lessons and learning, the intent is to activate both body and brain through the framework of a school environment.
String Balloon Relay

It’s a game where you work with the person across from you to skillfully control a string you’re holding and carry a balloon to a target location.
Because you can’t move the balloon well with your own power alone, you feel a bit of frustration, but also the fun of cooperation.
If you make it like a relay where you pass the balloon to the next person, not only coordination with the person opposite you but also strategy with the person before and after you is tested, which makes the game even more engaging.
It’s a game where the spirit of cooperation is key, including how you tension and move the string.
Cherry blossom viewing

As a seasonal recreational activity, I would like to suggest going cherry-blossom viewing (hanami).
As many people imagine, it’s about enjoying the sight of cherry blossoms.
The charm isn’t just in appreciating the elegance of the blossoms; it’s also in enjoying conversation there and savoring delicious food.
If you make it a walk and view the blossoms while strolling, it could also help address a lack of exercise.
Why not start by looking for the perfect spot for hanami? By the way, there are even recreational activities that let you enjoy the hanami atmosphere indoors.
tea party

Tea gatherings that let you enjoy a traditional Japanese atmosphere are highly recommended.
Simply savoring the tea is wonderful, but I think learning about etiquette and thoughtfulness is interesting as well.
It’s also a great idea to try preparing the tea yourself.
Let’s plan to give a lesson starting from the basics so both experienced and first-time participants can enjoy it.
Above all, I hope you’ll relish the delicious tea and the time spent chatting with friends.
This might even be the chance that turns tea into someone’s new hobby.
Rock-Paper-Scissors Relay

This is a game where teams aim to pass a ring they’re holding by hand all the way to the last person, using rock-paper-scissors.
The rule is that you can pass the ring only when the next person wins at rock-paper-scissors, so both speed and luck are put to the test.
As you become more conscious of speed, you need sharper judgment to track who wins or loses each round and whether the ring can be passed.
Having teams compete against each other is key to making everyone focus on the game’s sense of speed.
Makimaki Apple Game

As a recreation activity for day services or childcare settings, we propose the “Roll-Up Apple Game”! First, place paper apple motifs on construction paper and attach them.
Set them a short distance away; connect the stick and paper with clear tape, then roll the stick to wind the tape and draw the apples toward yourself.
It should get very lively if several people compete! By starting with the crafting process, participants can experience both making the materials and playing the game.
Please give it a try together and have fun!

casino

This video features an “unconventional day service” inspired by Las Vegas casinos.
Based on the concept of a care facility that seniors will want to keep attending, it offers table games like mahjong and blackjack, as well as pachinko, where participants look lively and seem to be having a great time.
Doctors specializing in dementia are taking notice, noting that the fun of games—where winning and losing are mixed together—stimulates the brain, elevates cognitive levels, and, when done continuously, improves cognitive function.
