[For Seniors] Fun Quiz Questions That Liven Up December (1–10)
Seven Herbs of Winter

A quiz related to the seven herbs of spring, imbued with prayers for health and safety.
It’s enjoyable whether you eat young greens at New Year’s or not.
The format is simple: you present a quiz with the names of the seven herbs hidden—but the answers feel just out of reach, keeping you in suspense.
Revealing hints one character at a time may help some people figure it out.
After the quiz, it could be fun to actually make and eat nanakusa-gayu (seven-herb rice porridge) as an event.
Why not try a seasonal quiz themed around the winter solstice in December?
Proverb Quiz

It’s important to train memory and build vocabulary.
With that in mind, how about preparing a quiz on proverbs and idiomatic expressions related to winter? It might be hard to picture at first, but for example: “Is ‘koharubiyori’ (Indian summer) a seasonal word for spring or winter?” It’s a two-choice format with example sentences shown, so the difficulty isn’t very high.
If this quiz sparks interest in words, I also recommend preparing a recreational activity where participants actually use idioms in conversation.
Winter Constellation Quiz

Let’s liven things up with a quiz about the constellations twinkling in the night sky! It’s a quiz designed to spark interest even among seniors who might think constellations are difficult.
Use drawings that connect the winter stars as hints, and have participants guess what animal or motif is hidden there.
Since just connecting the stars with lines can be hard to understand, it’s fine to make it multiple choice with two or three options, or prepare some hints! Giving a short lesson on the stars that make up the constellation and some fun trivia about it is educational, too.
Please feel free to use this as a reference.

Silhouette Quiz

It’s a simple quiz where you show the silhouette of something and ask people to guess what it is.
If you run it in December, incorporating winter fruits or seasonal traditions into the questions might give people an extra way to enjoy the season.
Another plus is how easy it is to create questions just by editing photos or illustrations.
It’s also fun—and mentally engaging—when simple subjects become surprisingly tricky in silhouette, like an apple ending up looking like a black circle.
One-year retrospective questions

A year-in-review quiz that prompts you to look back on the theme “What happened this year?” It turns events from January to December into a quiz everyone can answer together.
By including a wide range of fields—sports, culture, politics, and more—everyone can enjoy it.
You can have people raise their hands if they know the answer or hand out answer sheets for them to write on.
It’s also a brain-training quiz, since recalling the past stimulates the mind.
Splitting into teams and having representatives answer sounds fun, too.
Winter Multiple-Choice Quiz

Would you like to try a quiz about the kanji for “winter”? It offers a wide range of questions, and when you see the answers, there’s a fun trivia aspect to enjoy, so I highly recommend it.
For example, there are multiple-choice questions asking what winter melon is called in the Okinawan dialect, or in which season winter melon is a seasonal word in haiku.
Each question has a time limit, which makes for a snappy pace and adds to the fun.
Since they’re four-choice questions, you can also compete in a group by getting creative with how you answer, like holding up cards all at once.
Winter Olympics Quiz

Many people enjoy watching sports, right? So here’s a suggestion: a Winter Olympics quiz.
As the name suggests, it’s a challenge featuring questions about past Winter Olympic Games.
It’s great mental exercise because it prompts you to recall past events.
There are also questions that tap into your imagination, such as about athletes and emblems.
Since it’s a true-or-false format, it’s easy to join in casually.
