A quiz that seems easy but is actually hard: trick questions that make you think flexibly

That “simple yet difficult” quality is what makes trick quizzes unique, isn’t it? If you loosen up your thinking you can solve them, but fixed ideas get in the way and it’s hard to reach the right answer.

Quizzes that hide alternative uses of everyday words or play on our assumptions become more enjoyable the more you think about them.

In this article, we’ll guide you into the world of trick quizzes that will make you exclaim, “I see!” Give it a try with a flexible mindset!

Since two pieces of age-related information were given in a row—being granted the right to vote and being allowed to drink—your brain mistakenly assumes the question must be “From what age can you get a driver’s license?” However, let’s change our perspective and focus only on the act of “riding” to answer!

Among dams, lakes, and marshes, which one is the cleanest?

swamp

When you think about which is the prettiest among a dam, a lake, and a marsh, you might simply assume it’s the dam or the lake. However, the key to this riddle is to look closely at the words themselves. In Japanese, both ‘dam’ (ダム) and ‘lake’ (湖) include dakuten marks, which make their sounds “muddy.” ‘Marsh’ (沼), however, has no dakuten, so its sound isn’t “muddy.” Therefore, the answer is ‘marsh’ (沼).

If there are 10 carrots growing and you pull out 3, how many are left?

three

If you read 'ato' by converting it to mean 'remaining' (as in 'what’s left?'), then no answer other than '7' comes to mind, right? Here, by interpreting 'ato' as 'trace/mark' (as in 'footprints'), you can arrive at the answer. In that case, if you pulled out three carrots, there would be three marks as well.

artificial flower(s)

When asked “What about the flower?”, we tend to look for an answer in flower names. But no matter how hard you think that way, you won’t find it. This riddle should be solved by the sound of the kanji readings. ‘To increase’ is ‘zōka’ (増加). From there, a flower that’s also pronounced ‘zōka’ is… ‘artificial flower’ (造花)!

Trick Quiz Collection Enjoyable for Children and Adults (11–20)

Among chocolate, pudding, and donuts, which one was served for the 3 o’clock snack?

Among chocolate, pudding, and donuts, which one was served for the 3 o’clock snack?
See the answer

pudding

The key to this quiz is to focus on the number of characters in each snack’s name. “Chocolate” has 6 characters, “pudding” has 3, and “doughnut” has 4. If you interpret “3ji” not as “3 o’clock” (3時) but as “three characters” (3字), then the answer is the three-character name, “pudding.”

How many bouquets will there be if you combine bouquets of 2 and 3?

How many bouquets will there be if you combine bouquets of 2 and 3?
See the answer

1 bundle

You might be tempted to say that combining two bouquets and three bouquets makes five bouquets, but that’s incorrect. If you treat “bouquet” as a large grouping, no matter how many you combine, it only becomes one bouquet. Picture the scene of bouquets being put together, and you’ll arrive at the answer!

Which is bigger, an elementary school or an adult?

Which is bigger, an elementary school or an adult?

elementary school

Between an elementary school and an adult, we tend to think the younger elementary school would be smaller and the adult would be bigger. However, in this riddle, we must see the elementary school not as a person but as a building. From that perspective, the elementary school, being a building, is larger than an adult. Therefore, the answer is “elementary school.”
