Among all living creatures on Earth, insects are the most numerous. There are many kinds, such as butterflies, bees, ants, and rhinoceros beetles. More than one million species of insects have already been identified, and many more are thought to remain undiscovered. Insects are creatures that live in many different places around the world, including forests, towns, and deserts.

5,000–6,000 degrees

The center of the Earth is called the “inner core,” and it is extremely hot. Its temperature is thought to be about 5,000–6,000 degrees, roughly the same as the surface of the sun. It is so hot that even rock and metal would melt in such an environment. However, because it is the deepest part of the Earth, humans have not yet seen it directly.

The biggest living creature is the blue whale. It is longer than a bus, and its body is very heavy. It lives in the water and eats a lot of small food (krill). Elephants are big too, but whales in the ocean are even bigger!

About 40% of the Earth’s land is desert. When you hear “desert,” you might imagine a place full of sand, but any place that receives very little rainfall is called a desert. That’s why areas covered in ice and snow, like Antarctica and the Arctic, are also deserts. There are not only hot deserts but cold deserts as well.

The ostrich is the largest bird on Earth. It can stand over 2 meters tall and sometimes weigh more than 100 kilograms. It’s too large to fly, but it runs very fast—nearly 70 kilometers per hour. It lives in Africa and can defend itself with its powerful legs.

There are six large landmasses on Earth. These are called continents. The six continents are Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, and Australia. Because the Antarctic continent is covered in ice, people sometimes say there are seven, but usually it is counted as six. Each continent is home to many countries and people.

The river considered the longest in the world is the Nile. It flows from south to north across the African continent and ultimately empties into the Mediterranean Sea. Its total length is about 6,650 km, and it is an international great river that flows through 11 countries.
