[October Health Topic] Introducing Recreational Activities for Seniors! (61–70)

Although it’s spring on the calendar, many of us may still be spending a lot of time in warm indoor spaces.
So this time, we’d like to introduce an indoor putting golf game.
All you need is cardboard and a ball.
Cut various sizes of holes in a flattened piece of cardboard and write in the point values.
To make the game more exciting, assign fewer points to larger holes and higher points to smaller holes.
Once you place the cardboard on the floor, just roll the ball as you would in golf.
You can use a racket, or even a cane you’re comfortable with.
With simple preparation, it’s fun even with a small group, and it’s also effective for improving concentration.
String Balloon Relay

It’s a game where you work with the person across from you to skillfully control a string you’re holding and carry a balloon to a target location.
Because you can’t move the balloon well with your own power alone, you feel a bit of frustration, but also the fun of cooperation.
If you make it like a relay where you pass the balloon to the next person, not only coordination with the person opposite you but also strategy with the person before and after you is tested, which makes the game even more engaging.
It’s a game where the spirit of cooperation is key, including how you tension and move the string.
Pikagoro

As we age, it’s said that handling multiple tasks at the same time becomes more difficult.
Using both the mind and body has brain-training benefits, and if you move your body while thinking, you can expect even greater brain activation.
This time, I’ll introduce the Pika-Goro game.
Have the older adults sit facing each other, each holding two sticks.
The caller says “pika-pika” or “goro-goro.” On the cue “dokan,” the older adults should both grip the sticks and raise them.
Once everyone gets used to it, calling out “pika-pika” or “goro-goro” several times and then feinting can make it even more exciting.
Plastic Bottle Bowling

Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, bowling was hugely popular in Japan.
It’s said there were more than 3,500 bowling alleys nationwide, and bowling TV programs were very well received.
Let’s enjoy a bowling game that’s sure to spark nostalgic conversation.
Line up several plastic bottles on a table and have older adults roll a ball at them.
Since it’s a seated bowling activity, it’s suitable for people who have difficulty standing or who use wheelchairs.
With calls like “So close!” and “Strike!” the room is sure to take on a warm, friendly atmosphere.
Brain-training recreation with a ball

It’s a game where everyone sits on chairs to form a circle and passes balls to the next person.
The balls differ in color and shape, and only the specified ball is passed along.
The tricky parts are judging whether you’re holding the specified ball and being able to stop the previously specified ball.
The speed at which the balls are passed is also important—when it increases, people feel rushed, and the brain-training element of identifying the balls becomes even stronger.
