[For Seniors] Exciting Team-Based Recreational Activities

In this article, we introduce super exciting team-based recreational activities for older adults!

They might bring back nostalgic memories of your school sports days.

As the games progress, things can really heat up and turn into a thrilling competition!

Some activities can be done while seated or started with simple tools, so feel free to use these as a reference.

Making it a team competition might also be a chance to get friendly with people you don’t usually talk to.

We hope everyone has a great time together!

[For Seniors] Exciting Team Competition Recreational Activities (31–40)

Tightrope Walking Race

Tightrope Walking Race

When you hear “rope crossing race,” you might picture a competition where people walk across a rope—but don’t worry, it’s not nearly that intense.

The ones crossing the rope are slender tubes, like toilet paper rolls or plastic wrap cores.

Prepare several of these tubes, thread all of them onto the rope, and the team that gets them to the goal basket the fastest wins.

Teams sit in a single row and, without standing up, pass the tubes along by threading them onto the rope in turn.

If you load too many tubes at once they’ll get jammed, so make sure to leave some space between them as you pass them along.

Tower game

Tower game

This is a “Tower Game” where you play by stacking and balancing to see how high you can build.

Use paper cartons like milk cartons, keeping them in their cylindrical form, and cut them into strips about 1 cm wide.

Because the paper is light, it’s easy to stack at first, but it gradually becomes harder as the balance gets trickier.

It’s also fun to keep a record of how many pieces you can stack.

Exciting towel activity

Senior activities: 5 towel games that are a huge hit and guaranteed to get everyone excited #RecreationForSeniors #Towel #Lively
Exciting towel activity

This is a game that tests how quickly you can make decisions by seeing the outcome of rock-paper-scissors and taking immediate action.

Towels are placed on the table: the winner of rock-paper-scissors quickly pulls the towel, while the loser immediately presses down on it.

If the towel isn’t pulled out, the game continues, and this sequence repeats until someone successfully pulls the towel free.

To act quickly in line with the rock-paper-scissors result, focus and on-the-spot judgment seem to be crucial.

Bridge Dropping Game

[Elderly Recreation] Bridge Dropping Game!
Bridge Dropping Game

The “Bridge Drop Game,” where you throw beanbags to collapse a towel bridge! Drape a towel between two chairs and place weights, such as water-filled plastic bottles, on both ends.

Aim beanbags or balls at the towel; whoever collapses the towel bridge first wins.

If it’s hard to hit the target or progress is slow because the throws aren’t landing well, try playing in teams and taking turns.

Cheering each other on and cooperating makes the game more fun and helps strengthen connections among older adults.

Casual Ball Curling

Curling became well known thanks to the Winter Olympics, so many of you may already be familiar with it.

It’s a team-based game where you compete to see which team can get their ball closer to the center ball.

To prepare this recreation activity, all you need is a few balls.

With just that, you can create a fun activity that helps participants interact more with each other.

It can be done while seated, which is another appeal—it allows everyone to enjoy it according to their physical and mental condition.

Balloon basket

Senior Recreation: Build responsiveness to unexpected movements! Balloon-based activities for day services and elder care
Balloon basket

This activity has participants gently hit a balloon and try to land it in the basket in front of them.

Encourage them to pay close attention to the direction they hit the balloon and how much force they use.

In addition to aiming to get it into the basket in a single hit, it’s also recommended to add a variation where they bounce it upward a few times before aiming for the basket to develop their sense of balance.

By thinking about the direction to bounce the balloon and moving to retrieve it, they can train not only their bodies but also their reflexes and decision-making skills.

It would also be exciting to turn it into a cooperative game where everyone stands in a large circle and targets a basket placed in the center.

Balloon-popping race

Fiery Battle! Sports Day, Part 1 — This year features two events split by floor! Staff injured during long-rope jumping?!
Balloon-popping race

A simple and fun recreation activity that older adults can join safely and that instantly boosts the sports day atmosphere.

Players use a soft stick to hit a balloon placed on a table and compete to see which team pops theirs first.

Participants can stay seated, so even those worried about their legs or back can enjoy it with confidence.

It’s important to choose a stick made from materials that won’t hurt if they accidentally hit someone, such as a rolled-up newspaper or sponge.

You can also customize it by using balloons in team colors or arranging for confetti to burst out the moment a balloon pops.

Spectators can share in the excitement with clapping and cheers, creating a strong sense of unity.
