ball toss (traditional Japanese beanbag/ball-throwing game)

A classic sports day event: the ball toss! You can enjoy it indoors and even while seated.

Use soft balls like beanbags, and prepare baskets that are lower than the ones used at sports days.

You can set up about two baskets and assign different point values depending on which basket the balls go into.

Of course, if you’re able to stand, it’s totally fine to play standing as well! Split into teams and have fun!

Paper airplane throwing

Day Service Asumiru! Today's activity: paper airplane throwing.

Paper airplanes are a classic pastime, and many older adults likely played with them in their childhood.

This is a simple game where you fly paper airplanes and compete for points.

First, prepare plenty of paper airplanes.

It’s fun to make them from various materials and in different sizes, such as newspaper flyers or colored paper.

Decide how many throws each person gets, and draw lines on the floor to mark distances with point values—for example, reaching this line earns X points.

It’s a lively game whether you play individually or in teams.

balloon volleyball

Sometimes balloon volleyball is nice too, isn’t it?

Even if you don’t have much strength or can’t smash a blazing-fast attack, it’s okay! That’s because the ball we use for volleyball is a balloon! This is a game played using a balloon instead of a volleyball.

You don’t have to force yourself to stand—feel free to join while seated.

Try to keep the balloon from falling by using your hands, and sometimes your head or feet, to play.

Since it’s just a balloon, there’s no problem at all even if it hits your head!

target practice

This is “Teki-ate,” a target-hitting game where you throw beanbags.

Hang papers with illustrations or point values on a stretched string to create targets.

Since the targets are just hooked on by folding the edge of the paper, a light hit will knock them down.

If you aim well, you can knock down the neighboring targets all at once.

You can play while sitting in a chair, so adjust the distance to suit each person.

It’s super simple and easy, so it’s sure to be a hit!

Balloon attraction

This event is perfect as a sports day recreation for seniors that can be enjoyed easily while seated.

Place a ring on the floor or on a table and set a balloon in the center.

Attach a long string to the balloon, and participants reel in the string to pull the balloon toward themselves.

It’s very safe and allows anyone to take part without strain, which is part of its appeal.

The excitement builds as the balloon gets closer.

The person who catches the balloon first wins, and making it a team competition creates a sense of unity in the venue.

It’s also recommended to try using red and white balloons for the respective teams.

Passing balloons with handheld fans

Team competitions are exciting precisely because everyone participates, win or lose.

So this time, we’re introducing “Balloon Pass,” a game perfect for large groups.

All you need is a single balloon—just that.

Have each team sit in a single horizontal row of chairs.

At the starting signal, the person on the end passes the balloon to the next person, and the first team to get it to the last person wins.

There are many variations: pass with a fan instead of by hand, increase the number of balloons and compete on how many you can pass, or have the last person pop the balloon.

It’s a game anyone can enjoy in a variety of ways.

You might become a power hitter while staying seated!? Instead of hitting pitched balls, you’ll strike a stationary ball using a plastic bat or similar.

Divide the field into several zones and label them as Hit, Home Run, etc.

Your score depends on which zone the ball lands in.

If you were a Little League player back in the day, relive those memories and swing away! Of course, even those who’ve never played baseball can join in easily and have fun with this game.
