[For Seniors] Let’s Start a Fun Craft Activity
In elderly care facilities and day service centers, craft-based recreation is essential.
Because it involves fine motor movements, it helps with rehabilitation and stimulates the brain.
In this article, we’ve gathered easy and enjoyable craft ideas that older adults can make with minimal effort.
Even those who have never done crafts and lack confidence will find it easy to get started.
Most materials are things you already have at home or can quickly pick up at a dollar store.

[For Seniors] Let’s Start Fun Craft Activities (71–80)
Quilling art: grapes

This is a grape art piece made with quilling, where you roll narrow strips of paper.
Cut construction paper into long, thin strips and roll them around a chopstick.
Since it uses the fingertips, it can also help stimulate the brains of older adults.
Make several rolled pieces and glue them onto a backing so they resemble grape berries.
It already looks like grapes at this stage, but we’ll add a bit more.
Prepare circular cutouts of origami paper in colors like purple or pink.
When you glue these circles on top of the rolled paper attached to the backing, it creates a grape-like, realistic effect.
Displaying the grape artwork in a frame made from tree branches is also recommended.
You can even use branches you find while taking a walk in a park.
Making grapes with coffee filters

Here’s an introduction to a grape craft using coffee filters.
You might hear older adults ask, “Can you really do crafts with coffee filters?” Yes, you can.
Coffee filters don’t tear even when you place something moist on them.
This craft uses that water-resistant property.
Cut the coffee filter into round shapes like grapes.
Use liquid glue to stick them onto a backing sheet.
Then paint them with your preferred grape-colored paint.
If you peel off the filters before the paint fully dries, the paint will bleed through and create a grape-like image on the backing sheet.
You can also take the peeled-off filters and stick them on another sheet to make more grapes.
It’s fun to create two different styles of artwork in one go.
Stained glass grapes

Stained glass displayed in museums and churches creates a lovely atmosphere, doesn’t it? Let’s make a grape-themed piece with a stained-glass look.
Place a drawing of grapes on a backing sheet and cut along the lines with a craft knife.
Next, place blue and purple film over the grape drawing on the backing sheet and draw your cutting lines.
Cut along those lines and stick the pieces onto the backing sheet.
That’s all it takes to complete a stained-glass-style artwork.
Since it doesn’t use real glass and is easy to make, it should be a project that’s approachable for older adults as well.
straw basket

Here’s an introduction to a basket made with drinking straws that also works well as a room decoration.
Cut the straws and tie them with twine to make a cross shape.
Add more straws to extend the length, then weave them.
Keep folding and adding straws repeatedly as you go.
Fold the bottom section and secure it with cellophane tape, then trim off any excess straws.
By changing the angle of the overlapping folds, you can also change the size of the basket.
Try getting creative with the design and make baskets in shapes that older adults will enjoy.
Grape decoration made with paper cores

We will introduce a cute, three-dimensional grape decoration made using a toilet paper roll core.
Prepare scissors, craft scissors, a toilet paper roll core, tissue paper (flower paper), origami paper, glue, and a ruler.
Cut the toilet paper roll and create the base for the grapes.
Prepare 1–2 sheets of tissue paper, and the key point is to shape one side into a rounded form by puffing it out inside the toilet paper roll core.
Using the same method, make six grape berries.
Apply glue to the sides of the grapes and attach them together to form a grape cluster.
Twist brown tissue paper to make the stem, and attach the leaves you cut with the craft scissors.
Your grape decoration is complete.
scarf knitting machine

Here’s a scarf knitting machine perfect for seniors who enjoy knitting.
Prepare a paper cup, scissors, chopsticks, and yarn.
After making a hole in the bottom of the paper cup, attach chopsticks evenly around the outside.
Stick the end of the yarn (with tape on it) to the inside, then start hooking the yarn alternately around the chopsticks.
When the yarn forms a star shape, lift the lower strand over the upper one and pass it under the chopstick.
Repeat the same process to continue knitting.
Once you reach your desired length, pass all the lower strands up and off the chopsticks and remove the work from the chopsticks to finish.
miniature car

Let’s cut disposable chopsticks short and try making a miniature car.
Place the cut chopsticks on top of a paper with the car’s side outlines drawn, and glue them down as you arrange them.
Once both sides are finished, stand them up and keep attaching chopsticks so they form the shape of a car.
Add the wheels, and your chopstick car is complete.
It’s a lifelike car made entirely from chopsticks.
When it’s finished, older adults are likely to feel a sense of accomplishment.
It’s also the kind of project they could take home and delight their grandchildren by giving as a gift.
