[For Seniors] Let’s Start a Fun Craft Activity

In elderly care facilities and day service centers, craft-based recreation is essential.

Because it involves fine motor movements, it helps with rehabilitation and stimulates the brain.

In this article, we’ve gathered easy and enjoyable craft ideas that older adults can make with minimal effort.

Even those who have never done crafts and lack confidence will find it easy to get started.

Most materials are things you already have at home or can quickly pick up at a dollar store.

If you’re interested in crafts, give them a try!

Why not try making a moving fish using empty Yakult containers? The main materials you’ll need are empty containers and a pair of chopsticks or a stick.

You’ll need three mouth sections and one body section from the containers.

Use two mouth sections and the body section to create the fish’s body, and make the tail fin by cutting slits into the remaining mouth section.

Connect all the parts with a stapler or similar tool so that the fish wobbles when shaken.

Insert the stick, then add color.

Dabbing paint with a sponge will give it a scaly fish-like texture.

A snake that wriggles and stretches

Here’s an idea for a snake toy you can make with simple steps.

There are three main steps.

First, prepare four containers and use an awl to make a hole in the bottom of each.

Next, thread an elastic cord through the holes and tie a knot at each end so it doesn’t slip out of the containers.

That completes the snake’s body; finally, decorate the containers, then cut and color the elastic cord on the mouth side to look like a tongue, and you’re done.

The process itself is simple, but it turns into a realistic toy that wiggles and moves.

Even though the steps are simple, there are some fine tasks like threading the elastic through small holes, so it’s a craft that lets you focus your hands and enjoy the detailed work.

Totem pole

Craft time: Easy! Play with Yakult building blocks and make a totem pole! [Poi Art]
Totem pole

A totem pole refers to a columnar wooden sculpture erected by Indigenous peoples of North America.

They are characterized by colorful decoration and faces painted on them.

This time, let’s make a totem pole by decorating a Yakult container.

The method is up to you, but decorate the container with colored paper and, at the end, draw patterns and faces with a pen and color them to finish.

If everyone makes multiple totem poles and stacks them, it will look just like a real totem pole.

The detailed decorating involves using your fingertips, and thinking about what design to create as you go should be an enjoyable process.

Mummy-kun

Let's make a little mummy using an empty lactic acid bacteria drink container!
Mummy-kun

Here’s a great idea to try when you’re looking for a Halloween-season craft.

It’s a mummy mascot you can make using a Yakult bottle, pipe cleaners, and yarn.

First, attach the pipe cleaners to the bottle as arms, then wrap the yarn around to create the mummy.

Finish by sticking on googly-eye stickers you can find at 100-yen shops.

The steps are simple, but wrapping the yarn may require some dexterity.

It’s a recommended idea when you want a craft that doesn’t take much time but still gives your fingers a good workout.

Glowing Snowman

How about making a fun Christmas-time snowman using just empty Yakult bottles, round stickers, and decoration lights from the 100-yen shop? Peel off the outer label from the empty Yakult bottle, then use round stickers to create the snowman’s features.

For the nose, cut a large round sticker into a triangle—it works great.

Put the decoration light inside, and you’re done.

Even if it’s not a snowman, you can add any pattern to the empty bottle and pop in a decoration light to use it as various kinds of ornaments.

Here’s an idea for a ring toss game using Yakult bottles as targets.

Decorate the Yakult bottles with masking tape and pens, then stand and glue them onto a piece of cardboard covered with colored construction paper.

Finally, make the rings for tossing using pipe cleaners, and you’re done.

Since the bottles are glued onto the cardboard base, they won’t tip over when you play—that’s the key point.

Let everyone decorate the Yakult bottles with their own designs to make it more fun.

It’s a craft idea that’s enjoyable both to make and to play with after it’s finished.

uchiwa (Japanese hand fan)

Paste plain washi paper onto a uchiwa fan, and from there you’re free to design as you like! It’s a simple craft where you just prepare cool motifs like goldfish and flowers and stick them on however you want.

If you also have handmade washi from papermaking, you can do torn-paper collages too.

The big point is that you can enjoy it with complete creative freedom!
