Cat Day Quiz

Cat Day was established in 1987 by the Cat Day Executive Committee.

Inspired by the sound of a cat’s meow, it’s a day on which events and festivals are held nationwide.

Try incorporating cat-themed quizzes into your February recreation activities—they’re popular with older adults as well.

You can enjoy various formats, such as riddles or quizzes where you gradually provide verbal hints until participants guess the correct answer.

It’s a fun recreational activity that helps train quick thinking and reasoning while deepening knowledge, appealing not only to seniors who are confident in their cat knowledge.

Not only the first spring storm exists, but there are also the second and third.

Not only the first spring storm exists, but there are also the second and third.

Personally, I have the impression that strong gusts often blow in spring—how about you? The so-called “haru-ichiban” is something I vaguely think of as “a strong wind that blows in spring,” but borrowing the Japan Meteorological Agency’s wording, it’s defined as “a warm, somewhat strong southerly wind observed over a wide area between the beginning of spring (Risshun) and the spring equinox.” In fact, this haru-ichiban is sometimes followed by what people call haru-niban, haru-sanban, and so on.

However, these aren’t official JMA terms; they’re more at the level of expressions used on news programs.

I mean, if someone said “haru-gojuuban (spring number 50),” you’d be like… really?

Kabuki Day Word Association Game

[Word Association Game] Kabuki Programs
Kabuki Day Word Association Game

An association game themed around kabuki, one of Japan’s traditional performing arts.

February 20, the day when Izumo no Okuni first performed kabuki dance, is known as Kabuki Day, making this perfect for those looking for a February recreation activity.

Give seniors the prompt: “Write down as many kabuki plays as you can think of.” It can spark conversation, as participants who know about certain plays can present what they know, or everyone can discuss together.

It’s a recreation activity that deepens knowledge about kabuki while also evoking a sense of nostalgia.

Arunashi quiz

[Aru-Nashi Quiz] For Seniors! Introducing Fun Brain-Training Questions [10 in Total]
Arunashi quiz

This is a classic quiz where various words are divided into “has” and “doesn’t have,” and you’re asked to figure out the common feature or trait of the “has” group.

The possible answers are wide-ranging—like a word that can take the same suffix, or a word that contains another hidden word—so it’s perfect for brain training.

Since flashes of insight are key, some people may find it hard to arrive at the answer.

It’s also important to adjust the difficulty by setting a theme in advance, such as winter-related questions, or by timing when to give hints.

silhouette

[Senior Brain Training Silhouette Quiz] Shadow Picture Story 18 — Perfect for senior care activities and brain training by Fukukuru
silhouette

It’s a classic quiz where illustrations or photos are blacked out, and participants have to guess what the silhouette is.

If you set a theme in advance—such as items related to winter—it provides a big hint and makes it easier for participants to think.

A hallmark of silhouette quizzes is that they get harder the simpler they are, so it’s recommended to start with more complex shapes like a snowman or an ogre and then move on to simpler shapes like an apple or a mandarin orange.

Carefully observing the silhouette’s shape and comparing it with one’s internal image also makes this a good brain-training activity.

After the quiz ends, it might be fun to have participants combine the answers to create a story.
