Wordplay & Quiz Games (11–20)
A game where whatever you say gets answered with “XX.”
A game where you just reply with a set phrase no matter what someone says—what’s fun about that? you might think.
It seems easy because you just keep replying with the same words in a snappy rhythm.
But the prompts you’re given include little traps—words that make you stumble.
For example, if you’re told, “No matter what you’re asked, reply with ‘furabonogamu’,” you feel like you could do it, right? But when you keep answering quickly and rhythmically, some part of you gets led astray by the phrase ‘furoba no gomu’ (bathroom rubber), and you trip up.
It’s a simple yet tricky and fun game.
Rotational Shiritori
Shiritori is a classic, casual game for killing time.
But it can drag on endlessly and get messy when you don’t know when to stop.
In contrast, this “Rotational Shiritori” ends neatly and is played for speed.
You set a fixed number of turns in advance, and the game must come back around to end exactly on the starting word.
In other words, you choose the number of words beforehand, and after one full round, the last word must end with the same character the first word started with.
For example, if the shiritori starts with “a,” the last character must also be “a.” It’s smooth at first, but toward the end you have to connect words while considering the remaining count and possible words—making it a great brain workout as well.
Oogiri Guessing Quiz
Even as adults, many of our friends are people we know inside and out.
You can probably even guess the kind of answers they’d give in an improv-style comedy prompt.
In this game, you try to match each witty answer to the friend who wrote it.
It could be fun to award points for correctly guessing who wrote which answer.
Number guessing game
This “number-guessing game” is simple yet surprisingly deep.
First, players form a circle.
One person calls out a number, and everyone chooses to either sit or stand accordingly.
If the called number matches the number of people who are standing, that person wins.
There’s a psychological element to it, so it’s sure to excite adults as well.
You can also tweak it so that matching the number means you lose.
Try adjusting the rules to suit the number of players and the group’s dynamics.
No Voiced-Sound Game
Voiced sounds refer to “muddy” sounds like da and ji.
For example, daijoubu and gomen are words that contain voiced sounds.
This game is about having a conversation while banning these voiced sounds.
When you talk, choose a topic and discuss it.
Saying you won’t talk is not allowed.
Remove the voiced sounds and keep the conversation going.
If you answer reflexively, you’ll end up speaking as usual, so be careful.
Announcing that there will be a penalty game for each voiced sound used will make it more thrilling!
