When you come across the music genre “hard rock,” what bands do you picture?

By definition, it evolved from styles like blues rock, introducing—as the name suggests—hard-edged guitars, and it reached its peak in the 1970s.

Even so, many different types of bands today continue to develop their sound while showing the influence of hard rock.

So this time, under the theme of popular hard rock bands in Japan, we’ve gathered bands that embody hard-rock elements in a broad sense.

Many globally popular bands appear as well, so even if you usually only listen to Western music, we hope you’ll take a look at some Japanese bands!

Blending power metal and neoclassical metal, they have continued to captivate fans at home and abroad with their distinctive sound.

After resuming activities in 2007, they released new works energetically, and in September 2011 unveiled their ninth album, which became a signature release.

Their grand sonic world—woven from ferocious guitar solos, powerful vocals, and dramatic keyboard work—is highly regarded as a one-of-a-kind sound that unites the allure of heavy metal and classical music.

The rock band Inugami Circus-dan, which gained attention on the music variety show Ebisu Onsen, has captivated fans for years with its dark aesthetic.

Their name comes from the circus troupe that appears in the film Pastoral: To Die in the Country, and while they previously performed under the name Inugami Circus-dan (using standard characters), in 2012 they adopted their current stylization along with the concept of being a “more lyrical, extreme, underground, Japanese-style band.” Despite a look and concept that often get them labeled as a novelty act, they boast powerful vocals and musicianship, making it easy to understand why their impact on Japan’s indie scene is said to be immeasurable.

Once you start listening, you’ll be drawn into the depths for sure—an exceptional band that only Japanese artists could have created.

They’re also the very pioneers who sparked the “Zankyo-kei” trend from the early 2000s onward.

BLIZARD is a five-member hard rock band often called a forerunner of the visual-kei movement, thanks to all members being strikingly good-looking.

They made their major debut in 1984, the year after forming, and drew attention when Journey provided a song for them.

Evolving their sound ambitiously and experimentally—from the strongly British-influenced early period to the straightforward hard rock of their later years—they are also known for not receiving proper critical recognition, as their looks often overshadowed their music.

Although they effectively disbanded in 1992, they are a legendary artist you should listen to now more than ever, in an era where musical diversity has expanded.
