If you’re familiar with prewar popular songs and jazz, you might hear the charmingly deadpan melody and find yourself going, “Oh!” The song used in NTT Docomo’s “First Smartphone Plan” commercial is a hit from 1928, composed and sung by then-popular American star Frank Crumit.

In Japan, it’s been covered by many singers under the title “Shareotoko” (The Dapper Man), with lyrics that humorously portray the pathos of a man who mistakenly thinks he’s a ladies’ man.

Over the years it’s been used in various dramas and commercials in parody or newly arranged versions, and this commercial also features an original arrangement.

Hearing the piano’s dispersed chords sprinkled through a dreamlike soundscape and that exceedingly famous main phrase, most people would likely feel, even without knowing the title or the composer’s name, that they’ve heard it somewhere before.

The classical piece used in the November 2020 au commercial “Crane’s Swipe,” featuring the familiar Santaro trio, is “Aquarium,” the seventh movement of The Carnival of the Animals by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns.

It’s a suite whose character seems to embody Saint-Saëns’s personality—musically gifted enough to be called a genius, yet known for his caustic wit—so I recommend listening to it with that musical background in mind!
