Ghost origami

Let’s make some Halloween-style origami ghosts.
There are steps where you open out folds and squash-fold, so it might be a bit tricky until you get used to it.
But once you learn the method, kids will definitely want to fold them enthusiastically! It’s also a great idea to make lots of ghosts to decorate the classroom.
Another option is to feature the children’s ghosts on a wall display.
The expressions you draw can create ghosts with all sorts of personalities, so be sure to try folding them together with the kids.
Mr./Ms. Suisui Goldfish

Goldfish are a familiar sight at festivals.
The way they glide gracefully through the water feels so refreshing! Here’s a summer-themed craft idea inspired by goldfish.
First, take a sheet of construction paper to represent the surface of a fishbowl.
Put paint on some marbles and roll them across the paper to create patterns.
Next, cut a paper doily in half, fold both ends, and use red paint to stamp.
Finally, attach the patterned paper and goldfish parts to a fishbowl shape made from construction paper—and you’re done! With steps like marble rolling and stamping, it’s perfect for kids to enjoy, so have fun making it!
Soramame-kun’s Meadow Playtime

Here are some craft ideas for July inspired by the popular picture book series “Soramame-kun”! Let’s all work together to make cute Soramame-kun characters.
For Soramame-kun and Edamame-kun, cut origami paper into bean shapes and use jute twine to make their legs.
Also, let’s make flat pinwheels out of origami.
When children use scissors, please make sure teachers or guardians provide support.
In addition to pasting the crafts onto backing paper to display on the wall, it’s also fine to make pinwheels you can actually hold and play with.
Just like Soramame-kun and friends, it might be fun to take your pinwheels out to the playground and enjoy the summer breeze.
Surprise Parfait

Why not try making a jumbo parfait of your dreams together with the kids? First, cut tissue paper into circles and paint them with watercolors.
Next, tear pieces of origami paper and paste them onto a template with a parfait glass drawn on it.
In addition to origami, using crumpled floral paper adds a three-dimensional finish.
You can use the circular tissue paper as scoops of ice cream, make Pocky sticks or pudding out of origami—by combining various materials, it will look just as delicious as a real parfait.
Have fun making it together with the kids in a lively, cheerful atmosphere!

boing-boing jellyfish

Jellyfish are popular at aquariums, too.
Watching them drift and sway is so soothing! These cool-looking jellyfish are a perfect motif for a July craft.
On a sheet of construction paper, create an underwater scene by cutting tissue paper and colored paper into seaweed and rocks, and let jellyfish painted with watercolors swim through it.
Using pipe cleaners or raffia ribbon for the jellyfish tentacles helps convey movement.
Also, if you dilute the paint with plenty of water and apply it lightly, you’ll get a nice sense of transparency.
When attaching the pieces to the construction paper, adding a 3D element will likely delight the children.
Stained glass-style fireworks

How about making stained-glass-style art that can capture the sparkle of summer fireworks? Fold a piece of black construction paper and cut out several triangles.
When you unfold it, you’ll see a fireworks-like pattern.
Next, stick colorful cellophane onto a sheet of parchment paper.
Using lots of different colors will make it look even more like stained glass.
Finally, layer the black paper over the parchment paper, and it’s complete! When light shines through, it glows beautifully.
It seems like the perfect summer craft to spark children’s imagination.
Morning glories made with dyed paper

One of the things to look forward to as summer approaches is the morning glory.
Let’s use brightly colored dyed paper to express these flowers! First, cut a circle from washi paper, fold it, and dab paint onto the top so it soaks in; once it’s dry, unfold it.
Next, make leaves, vines, and a pot from construction paper and combine them with your dyed-paper morning glories.
If you use washi that absorbs paint well, you can beautifully recreate morning glories in soft, pale tones.
Coloring only the outer edges of the petals will make them look even more realistic.
You’ll end up with a summery piece that highlights each child’s individuality.
Be sure to include this in your summer craft ideas!
