Fun with preschoolers! July origami ideas to feel the season

Preschoolers who are full of curiosity and love learning through play.

At this stage, they enjoy using their hands, and origami helps nurture their concentration and imagination.

By making origami with friends and showing their creations to one another, their communication skills naturally improve as well.

In July, when we spend more time indoors, why not have everyone enjoy creating lovely, seasonally themed origami pieces? Here, we introduce several July origami ideas recommended for preschoolers.

We hope you find them helpful!

Swirly soft-serve ice cream

[Preschool Craft] Summer Craft! Swirly Soft-Serve Ice Cream with Origami | Origami Soft Ice Cream
Swirly soft-serve ice cream

You can make a three-dimensional soft-serve ice cream using origami.

First, let’s make the cone.

For the cone, draw a diagonal curved line on the origami paper as if drawing part of a circle, and cut along the line with scissors.

Draw crisscross lines to mimic a waffle cone, roll it into a cone shape, and secure it with clear tape.

For the soft-serve part, fold the origami paper in half twice.

When you have a small square, perform a squash fold to open it up.

Fold the opened piece in half, then twist it sideways as if rolling it.

Open it layer by layer and secure with tape, place it inside the waffle cone, and you’re done.

Easy-to-understand lantern

Simple Origami “Lantern” Folding Method ~How to Make Summer Festival Origami~ [Easy-to-Understand Voice Guide] | Origami Japanese Lantern
Easy-to-understand lantern

Let’s fold a paper lantern, the kind you often see at summer festivals.

First, fold the origami paper in half, then fold back about 1 centimeter at the top and bottom.

Next, fold it vertically, and fold both sides inward toward the center crease so they face each other.

Then make a small reverse fold, fold the corners into triangles, and form the colored-edge side into a ring and flatten it.

That’s it—you’re done! It’s fun to add a pattern in the middle, and using multicolored origami will give you a vibrant lantern.

Give it a try!

Cute crab

[Preschool Craft] Summer Project! Cute Origami Crab | Cute Origami Crab
Cute crab

Searching for crabs that often hide among rocks in the sea or rivers can be a wonderfully seasonal and fulfilling activity for children.

Here’s a simple origami crab you can make.

Fold into a triangle and a square to create creases.

Using those creases as guides, tuck the paper inward to form a triangle and shape the model.

While aligning with the central starting point and center line, fold and bend to create the crab’s claws and legs.

A key tip is to press the folds firmly.

Draw eyes on round stickers, attach them, and you’re done!

Plump goldfish

Let’s make a cute, plump goldfish.

Up to a point, this follows the same steps as folding a balloon.

Fold the origami so that two triangles overlap, then fold the two corners of one triangle up to meet the top corner.

Fold the left and right corners of the diamond formed in the center toward the center line, then fold down the two corners you just lifted and tuck them inside.

Turn the paper over, fold the left and right edges of the triangle toward the center line, and on the left side only, fold the bottom corner up at a right angle.

Glue it to the right side as is to form the tail fin.

Blow air into the balloon section to inflate it, add eyes, and your goldfish is complete.

Cute sunflower

[Preschool Crafts] Summer Origami Project: Cute Sunflowers
Cute sunflower

Let’s make a sunflower in origami that blooms toward the summer sun.

Glue yellow and orange origami paper together so that both colored sides are visible.

Make firm creases as you fold.

When you open and fold the paper toward the center, do it gently and carefully.

Fold each corner inward, then align the folded sections to the center and fold the left and right sides.

Open the folded sections, fold the top upward, then tuck the corners inside to shape the sunflower’s petals and finish the flower.

To make the center, fold a piece of brown origami paper in half into a triangle twice, then fold the corners toward the center.

Insert the brown piece into the middle of the sunflower, and you’re done.

Please give it a try!

Summer item! Straw hat

Summer Item: Easy! Origami 'Straw Hat' (Hiragana Guide)
Summer item! Straw hat

Let me show you a simple way to fold a summery, breezy straw hat.

First, fold the origami paper into a triangle to make a crease.

Open it up, then fold the two left edges to meet the crease.

Next, fold the remaining corner inward to form an isosceles triangle.

Flip the paper over and fold up the base of the triangle by about 2 cm.

Fold that section down in half, then fold it up again in half to create the brim.

Fold down the top point of the triangle to shape the hat, tuck in both corners to round it out, and you’re done!

The opening and closing mouth is so cute! Let me introduce a fun idea for a chompy little fish.

Fish often appear on the dining table, but they also show up a lot in anime, picture books, fingerplay, and songs.

This time, let’s make an adorable fish with a mouth that opens and closes using origami! You’ll need origami paper, round stickers, a permanent marker, and so on.

Solid-color origami looks lovely, but using your favorite patterns or holographic origami will give your fish extra personality.

In conclusion

We introduced July origami ideas recommended for preschoolers.

The hot summer often means spending more time indoors.

To help energetic children stay comfortable inside, try incorporating origami—which requires concentration—into your childcare activities.

It’s also a great idea to gather the children’s origami pieces and turn them into one collaborative summer artwork!
