Five-year-olds are getting better at using their hands to do all kinds of things.
At this stage, their desire to try new things really grows.
So here, we’re introducing July crafts that are perfect for five-year-olds.
We’ve prepared lots of ideas, from summer-themed transparent creations to fun Tanabata decorations.
Enjoy a fun time with the children while nurturing their creativity.
Because items made by children are treated as works, we consistently use the term “seisaku” (制作) in the main text.

[5-year-olds] Crafts to try in July! Ideas that capture the season (121–130)
Osakana-maru Uchiwa
Let’s make an essential uchiwa fan to keep cool in summer! Cut a circle out of thick paper, then use a craft knife to cut out a fish shape and a small round hole sized for a finger.
Prepare two of these.
The cutting with the craft knife should be done by a teacher.
Prepare a clear file cut to about the size of the fish and place it on one of the thick paper pieces.
Randomly attach cellophane in various colors to resemble fish scales.
Then glue the other piece of thick paper on top, add an eye with a round sticker, and decorate around the fish with crayons, and you’re done! The transparent part looks refreshing, making it the perfect uchiwa for summer.
shaved ice
How about making shaved ice, a summer staple? If you make it together with your child, it will become a fun memory.
Create the bowl and ice parts with construction paper, and use tissue paper, raffia tape, or tissues to represent the ice.
Color the syrup with paints or crayons to complete a colorful shaved ice.
Using stamps makes it enjoyable even for small children.
The finished piece is perfect as a wall decoration for your room, too.
It’s a great way to feel cool during the hot summer.

Sparkling tanzaku decorations
How about making a sparkling tanzaku decoration that’s perfect for hanging on the bamboo branches for Tanabata? Prepare the tanzaku part, where you write your wishes, in the classic style by cutting origami paper to about half its size.
For the sparkling section, cut a construction-paper circle shaped like a wind chime, hollow out the center, and use clear tape to attach small pieces of cut colored cellophane.
Combine this wind chime–like part with the tanzaku and you’re done! You’ll have a glittering, cool-looking tanzaku decoration—try hanging it on bamboo or putting it up on a wall.
silky beach
Summer-themed art projects and activities not only let children enjoy the season, they also nurture their imagination! Let’s try expressing a beach atmosphere through art to boost those summer vibes.
Kids can color freely on construction paper shaped like a beach umbrella, or tear tissue paper to resemble beach sand and glue it onto paper.
With their free ideas, what kind of beach will they create? Both children and teachers will be excited to find out.
It would also be lovely to display the children’s drawings or photos under the umbrella!
Mr./Ms. Suisui Goldfish
Goldfish are a familiar sight at festivals.
The way they glide gracefully through the water feels so refreshing! Here’s a summer-themed craft idea inspired by goldfish.
First, take a sheet of construction paper to represent the surface of a fishbowl.
Put paint on some marbles and roll them across the paper to create patterns.
Next, cut a paper doily in half, fold both ends, and use red paint to stamp.
Finally, attach the patterned paper and goldfish parts to a fishbowl shape made from construction paper—and you’re done! With steps like marble rolling and stamping, it’s perfect for kids to enjoy, so have fun making it!
