[For Seniors] July Events: Recommended Recreation Ideas for Senior Facilities
July is when the feeling of summer really ramps up.
When planning recreational activities during hotter weather, it’s important to pay close attention to heat precautions and the health management of older adults.
To avoid the heat, people tend to spend more time in cool indoor spaces.
At times like these, you’ll want to offer recreation that doesn’t feel monotonous.
Try incorporating a variety of activities themed around July events such as Tanabata, Marine Day, and the Day of the Ox (Doyo no Ushi no Hi).

Let’s write our wishes on tanzaku

Many of you probably wrote wishes on tanzaku strips and decorated bamboo branches when you were children.
As adults, we don’t often get such opportunities.
Even just writing your wishes on a tanzaku is very helpful for dexterity and brain activity.
You can also enjoy drawing illustrations on the tanzaku and adding decorations with origami.
Moreover, doing this in facilities or day-service centers can foster communication among participants as they discuss what wishes to write.

Let’s make Orihime and Hikoboshi.

Recommended Origami of Orihime and Hikoboshi for July recreation.
Using your hands for such activities helps invigorate the minds and bodies of older adults.
By sharpening the sense of touch and focusing on the task, it also provides beneficial stimulation to the brain.
Let’s make Tanabata decorations and enjoy the season to the fullest.
fireworks festival

How about enjoying a summertime tradition: a fireworks festival? The huge blooms that blossom across the night sky are a sight everyone looks forward to during the hot season.
If there’s a local fireworks show, it’s great to go attend; or you can make your own small festival by using available space, like the parking lot of a care facility.
Another option is to skip the big set-piece fireworks and savor the refined charm of sparklers.
The glittering showers of light will become an unforgettable memory.
Goldfish scooping

The sight of red fish gliding smoothly through the water brings a feeling of summer.
Try incorporating a goldfish scooping game into recreational activities at care facilities.
You might think handling live animals makes preparation difficult, but depending on the region, there are companies that rent out goldfish, large plastic tubs, paper scoops (poi), and more as a set.
If your budget allows, taking advantage of such services is one option.
Of course, you can prepare everything yourself, and if keeping the goldfish afterward would be difficult, you can adapt the activity into a super ball scooping game instead.
Eel Fishing Game

Let’s enjoy an eel-fishing game inspired by the Day of the Ox in midsummer! Fill a bucket with plenty of long, thin strips of newspaper to stand in for eels, then use a long stick to “fish” the strips out of the bucket.
At first you can pull them up smoothly, but as the bucket gets emptier it becomes harder, and the difficulty goes up.
You can sit in a chair with the bucket on the floor, or try putting the strips in a box on a table.
Mount Fuji Calisthenics

Summer is also a season when the heat makes you not want to move your body.
However, moderate exercise is important for your health.
That’s why I’d like to introduce the “Fuji-no-Yama Exercises.” It’s a seated stretching routine set to the song “Fuji no Yama.” Try enjoying movements inspired by Mt.
Fuji—like reaching both hands up—while you do it.
Another appeal is that listening to the song can make you think of the “Summer Fuji.” Thanks to the music and the stretches, you’ll feel refreshed.
Shoulder Tapping Exercise: Tanabata Version

Here’s a recommended activity that’s perfect for Tanabata on July 7.
It’s a recreation that adapts the shoulder-tapping exercise—often used in senior care facilities—into a version set to the Tanabata song.
Because it can be done while seated, seniors of all abilities can enjoy it.
The nostalgic song may prompt many people to recall memories from the past.
It also seems likely to help with dementia prevention.
In conclusion
We introduced enjoyable recreational activities connected to Tanabata and nostalgic summer memories.
Through seasonal activities, let’s spark conversation and share moments full of smiles.
From hands-on crafts to exercises set to songs, everything is easy to enjoy without strain.
How about making summer memories in a cool indoor setting?
